This remains a problem in intrepid (I'm using 64-bit Kubuntu). The OP understates the effect of this bug.
It's bad enough that the preview window is utterly useless (and hence povray is more or less useless for rendering complex scenes, as one cannot watch the progress of the scene generation, which may take many hours).
