[Bug 397332] [NEW] Please update HPLIP to 3.9.4b

2009-07-09 Thread Manfred
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

  # HP Linux Imaging & Printing System (HPLIP) 3.9.4 Release
  posted on May 02, 2009 11:09:34 am

Compared to CURRENT 3.9.2.x , 3.9.4b includes many fixes and support for
additional mainstream printers.
It is the latest version that still relies on HPIJS as the default.

Beware:
Starting with 3.9.6 , "The new native CUPS driver (HPCUPS) is now the default
printer driver. HPCUPS requires CUPS 1.2 or higher and is a complete
replacement for HPIJS." (
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=967420 )

Thus, this upgrade to 3.9.4.b is considered to be smooth and easy.

The next step might require additional care; but it will be necessary in order
to to support the new WiFi printers:
"A new utility 'hp-wificonfig' allows you to configure select wifi-capable
printers on a wireless network. ..."

Re: [Bug 441570] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000050

2010-04-05 Thread Manfred
Hi Jeremy,

thank you for taking care.
I think this issue is fixed.
I am using ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates and kernel 2.6.31-20.58 installed.
I also tried the stock kernel you mentioned (2.6.31.9-02063109) and could not
get this error.
Again, thank you for your work.

at 0050

Hi Manfred,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 441570

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 409819] Re: [regression] Built-in mic not working after pulse updates on Karmic. Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) sound card.

2009-10-13 Thread Manfred
I had the same problem and this page helped me fix it.
Ubuntu Karmic on Dell Studio XPS
After an update on ~ oct 11 2009 the mic did not record anymore.

This is what I needed to do to fix it:
run alsamixer in the command line and use these values:
headphone :: on
headphone1 :: muted
Mic Jack :: Mic in
Digital Input Source :: Digitial Mic 1
Digital Input Source 1 :: Digitial Mic 1

In Pulse I use: Stereo Duplex

Cheers and thanks.

[Bug 278211] Re: [Intrepid] Can't configure Wifi internet and ethernet static IP

2008-12-07 Thread Gerd Manfred
The network mananger in version 8.10 is downright shambles. I can confirm the
'gateway bug', mentioned above, which is adding 0.0.0.0 as a
gateway, automatically. But my problem is much worse.
I have two NICs, eth0 and eth1. One is local LAN and the other is the internet
connection. When I try to manually config the eth1(local), I enter the correct
network mask (255.255.255.0-- what else). When I save the configuration, the
mask is changed to unexplainable 24 - thats right, 24. And they add 0.0.0.0 as
gateway address, too. I have tried about 200 times, or so, every time I can
find my network mask changed to 24. The tabulator key does not work, by the
way. When I have entered the IP-address and use the tab key, I am taken out of
the ip-address/mask/gateway line. I have to use the mouse to go to the mask
box. There I have to get out by pressing the tab key, otherwise the OK box will
not show up active, from its inactive state. The whole GUI is corrupt, as it
seems to me.
I have also tried to edit /etc/network/interfaces, calling ifup in rc.local,
and all the expensive stuff. When I reboot, I find out that my network manager
has gone completely bananas.
I have had ubuntu 6.01 for years, and fedora 6 for years. No problems.I have
always been able to ping them.
Since ubuntu 8.10 my network has gone bananas. Can anyone explain to me how I
should proceed?
I mean, since the graphical tool is obviously corrupt, which other
possibilities do exist?
How can I bypass the graphical networking tool? How come that the network tool
is reading the correct info from the files and making shambles out of it?. Now
I had to boot VISTA and submit this. F...it. By the way, referring to bug
278211, I also cannot understand the configuration options.

[Bug 224141] Re: Maven's command line processing broken - fix available in Debian

2008-12-01 Thread Manfred Moser
As far as I can tell the original bug reports in debian bug tracking
linked off this report contain all the relevant information. However I
think that given that hardy is a LTS and Maven 2.0.8 is severly broken
according to the Maven developers themselves I suggest to backport the
Maven 2.0.9 package from Intrepid to Hardy. That package works great.

[Bug 288430] Re: gnome panel after copy changes to one icon affect the other

2008-10-25 Thread Manfred Georg
Sorry I didn't make myself clear. A similar procedure is able to make the icon
change as well. The problem is clearly that the icons are sharing the same
data. They are identical after a reboot, and are both the same as the last
change
that was made to either one. I've personally done it with the icon picture and
command
settings, but I assume it also works with title and comment.

Again, I've only seen this when copying the original firefox icon after
a fresh install.

[Bug 288430] Re: gnome panel after copy changes to one icon affect the other

2008-10-27 Thread Manfred Georg
How can I possibly make this clearer?!
I'll try again!

It is possible to create two icons on the panel which have the property that
when one of them
is changed (such as by changing the command it executes) the other will also
change (after a reboot).

How to reproduce.
- Install Intrepid (Beta), or Hardy.
- use control-click-drag to copy the original firefox icon into a neighboring
position on the panel, thereby creating a copy of it.
- right click on the NEW icon and select properties.
- Edit the command line in properties (such as by adding "--no-remote -P
profile2")
- reboot
- the original icon will now execute the modified command

The same procedure can be used to change the icon picture of the
original firefox icon by modifying the copies icon picture.

[Bug 288430] Re: gnome panel after copy changes to one icon affect the other

2008-10-27 Thread Manfred Georg
Ok, if that is the expected behaviour (I I don't think it should be, as
it is very counter intuitive) than how come the behaviour changes if I
copy the copy?

- Install Intrepid (Beta), or Hardy.
- use control-click-drag to copy the original firefox icon into a neighboring
position on the panel, thereby creating a copy of it.
- use control-click-drag to copy the copy of the icon into a neighboring
position, thereby creating a second copy.
- right click on the FIRST COPY's icon and select properties.
- Edit the command line in properties (such as by adding "--no-remote -P
profile2")
- right click on the SECOND COPY's icon and select properties.
- Edit the command line in properties (such as by adding "--no-remote -P
profile3")
- reboot
- the original icon will now execute the FIRST COPY's command, the SECOND COPY
will execute the correct command.

This is inconsistent behaviour.

[Bug 288430] [NEW] gnome panel after copy changes to one icon affect the other

2008-10-23 Thread Manfred Georg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

It is possible to have icons on the panel which share resources. When a
change is made to the launch command of one it will become visible in
the other after a reboot (probably also relogin).

How to reproduce.
- Install Intrepid (Beta), or Hardy.
- click control drag the firefox icon into the panel (a + sign cursor will
appear) to make a copy.
- right click select properties.
- Edit the command such as by adding "--no-remote -P profile2" before %u
- be happy until next reboot
- reboot
- notice that the original firefox icon now is changed to be the same as its
copy
(additional changes to the original or the copy will affect both after
logging in again).

The same can be done by changing the icon. I'm testing whether it is possible
to reproduce this in
other ways than by copying the original firefox icon (I immediately erase the
other two default icons).

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 250960] [NEW] REGRESSION: firefox 3.0 does not honor -P flag to start a session using a specific profile

am using it for (it separates cookies, history, and preferences).
This flag does not work in Hardy with firefox 3.0 anymore.

firefox -P "profile2" -no-remote %u

Re: [Bug 250960] Re: REGRESSION: firefox 3.0 does not honor -P flag to start a session using a specific profile

2008-07-22 Thread Manfred Georg
There is no output.
It opens the correct page but in the wrong profile (it uses the
currently running firefox instance instead of opening a new one with
the specified profile)

for example

firefox
* runs firefox *
firefox -P profile2 http://www.cnn.com
* opens a new window with http://www.cnn.com in it but using the
default profile *

if I close all the firefox windows (and wait a couple seconds for it
actually to shut down firefox) and then give the command
firefox -P profile2
* opens firefox using profile2 *
firefox -P default
* opens a window using profile2 *

Hope this explains what I'm seeing,

Manfred

[Bug 277298] [NEW] dvips defaults to a4 despite /etc/papersize and $PAPERSIZE

2008-10-02 Thread Manfred Georg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-base-bin

The default behavior in dvips is to get a4 paper despite any system settings
contrary.
Although I wish the program actually looked at /etc/papersize or the
environment,
the package could just set the default correctly in
/usr/share/texlive-bin/config.ps
and /etc/texmf/dvips/config/config.ps
by placing the letterSize block above the a4 block for
locals that demand letter paper. This could be handled
by a script when dvips is configured.

Sigh, yet one more reason we should all just use a4 and be done with it.

Thanks,

Manfred

I figured out the problem. The flag --no-remote needs to be added to the
command line.
For example:

firefox --no-remote -P profile3 http://www.google.com

[Bug 242483] [NEW] New Upstream - Netbeans 6.1

2008-06-23 Thread Manfred Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netbeans

A new release of Netbeans has been out at http://www.netbeans.org/ for
quite a while. There were a number of interesting new features as well
as numerous performance improvements. It would be great to get this
packaged in parallel to the releases at Netbeans in the future.

Description: Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer (Binary Emulator and Library)
While Wine is usually thought of as a Microsoft Windows emulator, the Wine
developers would prefer that users thought of Wine as a Windows compatibility
layer for Linux. Wine does not require MS Windows, but it can use native system
dll files in place of its own if they are available.
 .
This package includes a program loader, which allows unmodified Windows
binaries to run under compatible hardware. This package also includes the
library that implements the Wine project's free version of the Windows API,
allowing successful running of programs ported directly from Windows.

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-10-28 Thread Manfred Usselmann
> In my opinion the only possibility is that these people have explicitly
> chosen to not remove obsolete software when asked by the installer.

At least in my case this is simply not true. I did use update-manager
and did agree to remove all absolute packages. There are other reports
above which say the same. But the responsible people seem not to believe
in this and continue to state that we must have done something wrong,
because they can't reproduce the problem. ;-) It obviously does work in
the standard test cases but it looks like that under certain
circumstances evms does not get removed although it should.

The common denominator _seems_ to be that all those systems started with
an earlier version than feisty.

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-10-07 Thread Manfred Usselmann
After upgrading to from 7.04 to gutsy, I couldn't boot with 2.6.22-12 and -13.
I only got repeated messages scrolling on the screen: 'device-mapper: table:

2.6.20-16 booted fine.

After changing /etc/evms.conf (exclude = [ * ] in sections 'activate'
and 'sysfs_devices') 2.6.22-13 booted now without problems and no
problems with udev using too much cpu.

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-10-08 Thread Manfred Usselmann
I used update-manager -d to update my system from 7.04 to 7.10 beta on
the 3rd of Oct. The upgrade process asked me to confirm the deletion of
a lot of packages what I did. Nevertheless evms was not removed and my
system didn't boot with kernel 2.6.22-12 after the upgrade. Luckily
2.6.20-16 was also included in the grub menu and did allow me to boot my
computer.

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-10-11 Thread Manfred Usselmann
I too have used update-manager -d for several Ubuntu versions in
sequence. I did never actively install evms and was not aware of its
existence. Only when the update to Gutsy left me with an unbootable
system (with the latest 2.6.22 kernel, 2.6.20 allowed me to boot and fix
the system). I can also confirm that evms remained installed despite me
agreeing to the removal of all suggested packages.

[Bug 164573] Re: Glassfish V1 broken in Gutsy Gibbon

Attached the error Glassfish is throwing. Note I am sure it is not a problem
with Glassfish itself since I have the application running properly on a Windows
distribution. There is a problem in the Ubuntu Glassfish distribution. I think
it
has to do with the fact that it does not seem to ship Apache Ant in the server
itself. Hopefully this can be fixed soon.

[Bug 69611] jump to last position when reopening file

2006-10-31 Thread Manfred Georg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim-common

in /etc/vim/vimrc

the commented lines that allow one to jump to the last position when
reopening a file are incorrect. It doesn't act properly if a user
remaps g in their .vimrc . It needs an ! after the normal. It should
read:

" Uncomment the following to have Vim jump to the last position when
" reopening a file
"if has("autocmd")
"  au BufReadPost * if line("'\"") > 0 && line("'\"") <= line("$")
"\| exe "normal! g'\"" | endif
"endif

Notice the ! after normal, that needs to be added so that it doesn't
remap the g. Obviously this is only a problem if someone uncomments
those lines, and has g remapped in their .vimrc (or vimrc.local in my
case).

to reproduce, uncomment those lines in /etc/vim/vimrc and add
noremap g >>j
to /etc/vim/vimrc.local

2010-05-02 Thread Manfred Tillmanns
I've installed and tested the latest upstream kernel (which I found as
2.6.34-999-generic, hope it's the right one). Sorry to say that my
wireless-card is still *not* accepted by Ubuntu 10.04.

I did some investigation and found the solution in Bug #509265:
After installation of packet "linux-firmware-nonfree (1.8) [multiverse]" the
pain has gone and my prism2-wifi-card works again!!!

[Bug 552787] [NEW] colorspace problem creating video from png sequence using mf://

2010-03-31 Thread Manfred Georg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

When playing a video of a sequence of png images, the colorspace is
incorrectly converted, resulting in incorrect colors.

command:
mplayer mf://*.png
mplayer mf://*.png -mf type=png -vf scale,format=yv12,scale
and everything else I tried.

the same problems are present in mencoder.

This is fixed in the current snapshot of mplayer (2010-02-10)

the moment. See http://packages.debian.org/sid/maven2. I follow the list
pkg-java-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org to see what updates are
coming and in update from these repos.

2009-10-04 Thread Manfred Moser
Oh and Scott. I agree with Martin .. if the package stays as is it is
not usable at all and should actually be removed and people should use
the upstream install instead. That would be a sad state of affairs..

[Bug 416312] Re: Upgrade maven to 2.2.1

2009-09-10 Thread Manfred Moser
I would suggest to give this a very high priority since the current
Maven version in Ubuntu is too old to be usable for anything serious
(too many bugs) and this one fixes it all up. It is also already
packaged in Debian so should be relatively easy to move over.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 416312 ***

2.2.1 is now packaged in debian and should be pulled into karmic. See
debian Bug#542546. Leaving Maven2 at the current version makes it
unusable as a package due to its age and serious problems with the old
versions.

2009-10-25 Thread Manfred Bergner
Sorry, but downgrading to usbutils_0.73 has not resolved the problem.
The USB malfunction of my LG X110 netbook seems to be kernel related.
Perhaps there is a different bug in the USB-utilities.

#Ernesto, thanks a lot for your advise. After blacklisting "uvcvideo" in

functional again :-) Till now I have made several reboots with success.
My computer is also equipped with this bison webcam (ID 5986:0203) and I
can't find any incoherence between bug #435352 and my problem. I will
mark this report as duplicate of 435352. Can someone increase the
importance level of bug 435352 because this issue seems to affect many
people!

[Bug 427539] Re: [FFe] Sync libmaven packages from Debian unstable

2009-10-03 Thread Manfred Moser
As a Java developer that uses Maven professionally and develops on
Ubuntu every day I would strongly suggest to upgrade Maven. Otherwise I
would actually remove Maven2 as a package since that would at least
force users to install from the upstream tar and use the latest one
instead of using the old 2.0.9 release and suffer from some of the
severe problems with it that are actually really hard to find sometimes.

[Bug 48499] Re: hald blocks ide bus if cdrom on same bus with harddisk(was:Extremly slow IO performance with dapper, high wa% on Dell Inspiron 8200)

2006-06-14 Thread Manfred Odenstein
Per you are right, but if I configure the policy in that way, that hal
shouldn't poll cd/dvdrom, and he (she, it) blocks the bus anyway, it's
not acceptable, and if this behaviour was also in previous releases (it
wasn't) it would be ok, not really, but I 've to live with that. I know
there are different hal versions for 2.6.x kernels, one for less than
2.6.13 and one for above, maybe there is the problem.

Further steps:
Due the fact that this bug is unconfirmed, I will try on my spare harddisk an
"old-school" gentoo installation (I'm more familar with gentoo than with
debian-unstable), with nearly same kernel, udev, dbus, hal version, and will
check if there is the same problem, an if no, I will check what the friendly
gentoo guys did (which patches they apply)

regards
