How can I possibly make this clearer?!
I'll try again!

It is possible to create two icons on the panel which have the property that
when one of them
is changed (such as by changing the command it executes) the other will also
change (after a reboot).

How to reproduce.
- Install Intrepid (Beta), or Hardy.
- use control-click-drag to copy the original firefox icon into a neighboring
position on the panel, thereby creating a copy of it.
- right click on the NEW icon and select properties.
- Edit the command line in properties (such as by adding "--no-remote -P
profile2")
- reboot
- the original icon will now execute the modified command

The same procedure can be used to change the icon picture of the
original firefox icon by modifying the copies icon picture.
