[Bug 295140] Re: k3dsurf doesn't start

2008-11-15 Thread Lars
K3dsurf's icon is visible for about 10 seconds in the panel but then it
disappears without K3dsurf starts.
If I try to start it from a terminal I receave the message "Segmenteringsfel"
it would be "segment erroe" or something in English.

I gave feedback earlier that the problem seemed to have
gone away after an update with some packages, but it didn't.
My sons only told me later that they typically boot 2 or 3 times

the power button (hard reboot).

Two more things that may be helpful:

I really believe this is an AMD issue. Pretty much all similar
problems mentioned in Ubuntu Forums give AMD (64 bit) as
the hardware. Maybe somebody should take note of this.

In my case, I did not have to start any application. The
freezes always occurred somewhere during the automatic
login, leaving the Heron without panels top and bottom, or
a bit later, simply leaving the mouse frozen up. The times
it actually did not freeze up during or imediately after the
boot, it worked fine afterwards (mostly Mozilla or Konquerer
with its build-in flash capability).

I have downgraded to 7.10 and leave it at that until a
kernel after 2.6.24 is used, since that seems to be the culprit
from what I got from the forums.

[Bug 234726] [NEW] Upgrade 8.04 LTS errors processing network-manager

2008-05-25 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

During upgrade to 8.04 LTS, I got something like:
Errors were encountered while processing:
   network-manager
   network-manager-gnome

That's all. The PC was frozen after this.
After switching off and rebooting, the PC runs
normally again, it seems. Should I worry about
these messages? Anything I can do to see if
everything really works?

Thanks

[Bug 50261] The Zeroconf daemon (mdnsd) is not running

2006-06-18 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

Install Kubuntu (in Vmware)
Click the Konqueror icon on the panel
Click Network Folders
Click Network Services

This gives rise to the error:
The Zeroconf daemon (mdnsd) is not running

Not sure what *should* happen but I suggest one of the following:

The Network Services icon is not shown
The Zeroconf daemon is already set to run (at boot or login time?)
The user is asked if he wants to start the daemon (with very brief explanation
of what it does)

[Bug 50263] KDE bug reporter requires working Kmail config

2006-06-18 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde

I managed to crash Amarok a few minutes into my new Kubuntu install.
This crash was nicely detected, but the handling didn't work for me:

1. It fired up a new Kmail message (nicely worded)
2. When I hit 'send' as suggested, I got a warning that no file was attached
3. When I continued sending, Kmail told me that it wasn't configured to send
mail

So the end result was a bit messy.

Suggestions:

1. Don't rely on e-mail to send bug reports; send them directly over the
Internet (maybe fall back to e-mail if offline).

2. Make sure there is an attachement, or that you don't refer to there
being one (KDE's attachment detection is very handy but the end result
here will confuse users).

[Bug 50264] "Samba Shares" is likely to mean nothing to new user

2006-06-18 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

If I launch Konqueror and select Network Folders, one of the options I'm
given is "Samba Shares".

It's difficult to imagine a user who has just installed Kubuntu onto
their Windows box being able to make the mental leap from "Samba Shares"
to "Other Windows boxes on my network".

A better name would be "Windows Shares (using Samba)" (you can cut out
the last two words if needed; credit can always be given on the
following page, along with an examplanation that SMB isn't just a
Windows protocol on the remote off-chance that anyone cares).

[Bug 50265] Amarok fails to play mp3s

2006-06-18 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

After copying an mp3 to the local hard drive and either clicking its
icon or loading it from Amarok's menu, I get the mp3 in my playlist,
with track name etc.

It seems to play through the track very quickly (under 1 second) and
then tell me the playlist is finished.

At no point do I get an error message.

If mp3s are not supported (e.g. patent reasons) this needs to made clear.
If they're supported, then any error needs to be picked up...

[Bug 50266] Amarok crashes when playing a file via a Samba share

2006-06-18 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

I'm able to browse into my music folder using Samba.
I'm able to copy files to my desktop without permissions problems.

However, Amarok will crash, as soon as it tries to load a file (tested
mp3, flac) from a Samba share.

The following information is generated in Kmail (which I haven't
configured to send):

amaroK has crashed! We're terribly sorry about this :(

But, all is not lost! You could potentially help us fix the crash.
amaroK has attached a backtrace that describes the crash, so just click
send, or if you have time, write a brief description of how the crash
happened first.

Many thanks.

[Bug 113658] When apt-cacher is used, Update-Manger fails (not #78673 duplicate)

2007-05-09 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Update-Manager fails with GnuPG code 131072 but this is not a duplicate
of bug #78673.

Error message:
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] $ gksu "update-manager -c -d"
   warning: could not initiate dbus
   extracting '/tmp/tmpy-qZkJ/feisty.tar.gz'
   authenticate '/tmp/tmpy-qZkJ/feisty.tar.gz' against
'/tmp/tmpy-qZkJ/feisty.tar.gz.gpg'
exception from gpg: GnuPG exited non-zero, with code 131072

I have apt-cacher running on the same machine (192.168.1.11); other security
updates work with apt-cacher:
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] $ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
   Acquire::http::Proxy "http://192.168.1.11:3142";;

If I change the apt.conf content back to
   Acquire::http::Proxy "false";
the upgrade works!!!

This looks pretty clear to me that update-manager does not like apt-
cacher in between...

[Bug 155277] Error "scanimage: sane_start: Scanner cover is open"

2007-10-21 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Hallo,

since I updated from Kubuntu 6.06 to 7.10 running an "SHARP JX330 SCSI
flatbed scanner" with scanimage produces this error:

$ scanimage --device-name='sharp:/dev/sg0' --source='Flatbed'>out.pnm
scanimage: sane_start: Scanner cover is open

Because I try to scan a book, the scanner cover is open indeed, but this
used to be no problem.

If I scan with xscanimage, it finally works with open cover if I scan
with closed cover first. Here the output of
SANE_DEBUG_XSCANIMAGE=4 xscanimage 2>debug.log

described above

Unfortunately this workaround doesn't work with gscan2pdf.
I also tried to find a hardware workaround but I don't know how the scanner
knows it is open. I thought there would be a little stylus or switch that has
to be pressed, but the one I found doesn't work. I have no manual or technical
information about the scanner.

Thanks,
Lars

[Bug 63383] Changing the time locks me out of sudo

2006-10-01 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

Using Kubuntu 6.06, KDE 3.5.2

Here's what I did to trigger the problem:

Logged in to KDE
Noticed that the time was an hour out
Went to adjust date/time in the panel/clock menu
Set time to adjust automatically and timezone to Europe/London
Clicked Apply

Good, the clock is now correct (time goes back about 1 hour 20 minutes,
because it was quite a bit out before).

Here's what happened:

About half an hour later I tried to select Add/Remove programs from the KDE menu
Pointer jumps around wildly but nothing launches, no error.
Try again and then just get an message that su returned an error.
Tried "sudo su" from console and got:
sudo: timestamp too far in future: Oct 1 17:26:20 2006

Seems to be ok now - enough time has passed ;) - but if the adjustment
was bigger I'd have no idea how to fix it!

[Bug 560249] Re: ubuntu 10.04 install doesn't provide jme modue for jmicron ethernet

2010-04-28 Thread Lars
Hallo JFo,

I was not able to boot with the daily-live/current amd64 iso.

I have seen only DVD images under the link you sent before:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/

The reason to use the alternate disk was that it was the only version with
previous ubuntu releases that supported the creation of (luks) encrypted
partitions.
I'm not sure the lucid desktop versions can do this.

The init ramdisk seems not to contain the module. But I'm unsure if the
initrd or the squashfs has to contain the module. Maybe the alternate
image differs in this point from the desktop image?

I'll have a look tomorrow again.

Regards
Lars

[Bug 577073] [NEW] System freeze when using EXA with radeon driver

2010-05-07 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

System hangs when using accelerated X11 and KMS
System is not pingable anymore

I can work around this by setting either:

Option "EXANoComposite" "True"
but this is nearly unusable. It's _extremly_slow_ !

or

Option "Accel" "Off"
usable but slow.

dmesg | tail:
[ 1110.762731] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR*
fence(8800a922b040:0x6817) 510ms timeout going to reset GPU
[ 1110.764144] [drm] RB2D reset succeed (RBBM_STATUS=0x0140)
[ 1110.764148] [drm] GPU reset succeed (RBBM_STATUS=0x0140)
[ 1110.764161] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR*

[ 1110.764163] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signaled fence(0x6817)

I can reproduce the problem very easy with X11 accel and loading this website
in firefox and moving mouse while loading the website:
www.bhkw-forum.de

The last lines received of /var/log/messages through ssh from remote:
May 7 15:58:32 hostname kernel: [ 5261.603948] [drm] CP reset succeed
(RBBM_STATUS=0x83F86100)
May 7 15:58:32 hostname kernel: [ 5261.603952] [drm] radeon: cp idle
(0x0200)

I'm using X with two heads (both DVI) on a single Radeon PCI Card!

[Bug 566149] Re: Lucid: No USB after resume on Thinkpad X201, T410, T410s, T510, W510

2010-05-08 Thread Lars
I do have the t410 with the nVidia GPU. I experience the faulty USB-
behaviour after resume from suspend with the actual 2.6.32-22 Kernel. I
also installed the new 2.6.34 mainline build. But this won't even boot.
The initrd stops after 0.65s without any error message. Any idea? Maybe
opening a new bug report for that?

I do also have the 1.18 BIOS. I Also tried to set everything back to
factory defaults, but the error still occurs on my t410.

[Bug 560249] Re: ubuntu 10.04 install doesn't provide jme modue for jmicron ethernet

2010-05-04 Thread Lars
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

The 10.04 beta2 amd64 alternate installation CD doesn't provide the jme
module for the one and only ethernet card provided by my notebook.

I managed to load the module from the installation CD after it is
installed onto the target partition, but this is somehow not user
  friendly for the normal user.

This bug is still valid but only for the alternate install iso.
The desktop version is loading the module.

I needed the alternate iso to be able to luks-encrypt a partition.

[Bug 575106] Re: Just a spelling mistake

2010-05-05 Thread Lars
I have noticed this in version 1.4 and version 1.5 - awesome which I'm running
now.
Hey I don't think its worth all this fuss, I just didn't know any other way to
mention what I have noticed, it really has no affect on the program at all, and
I am no expert with these things at all, I know there are people that can just
go into the code and change it themselves in 5 seconds, but thats not me, I
just love using it and happen to notice spelling errors. (don't worry if there
is mistakes is my post but OK?) :)

Thanks Brett.

[Bug 150702] Re: alt shift tab stopped navigating windows

I confirm this on a clean install of Karmic, with visual effects set to Normal.
Alt+Tab works, Shift+Alt+Tab does not.
Turning off visual effects fixes the problem.

[Bug 559091] [NEW] errors while partitioning/formating RAIDs during server installation

2010-04-09 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

Hi this is a bit difficult!

This is a report for ubuntu server amd64 10.04 beta2.

Our standart setup for server looks like this:

/ on /dev/md0 (RAID1) over /dev/sd[ab]1
/var on /dev/md1 (RAID1) over /dev/sd[ab]2
/tmp on /dev/sda3
swap on /dev/sdb3

The server I install ubuntu on was running suse before. It contains a
12TB RAID6 over 15 disks. This provokes the partitioning programm to
display an error. This should be better a warning, because I don't want
to partition a RAID6 but put the filesystem directly on it. See picture
1 (IMAG0010k.jpg)

I want the partitioning scheme to be different than it was for the previous
SuSE installation and therefore cleaned up the partition tables on sda and sdb.

It confuses me with the display of a partition number on a RAID1 and
unused space.

After accepting the whole partition scheme (as shown above) the systems
asks me how to boot from degraded RAID1 and then asks me to if I really
want to write the changes to disk. I accept this and the it reports me
an error that says it somehow can't mount the RAID on / (rootfs). I have
no picture of this error because I managed to work around this:

I went to the second tty and created the ext3 on the RAID1s manually on for /
(rootfs) and /var.
Then I rebooted and just reused the already existing partition tables. (picture
2 IMAG0012k.jpg)

The I the installtion process went on and it accepted the /-partition.

I hope this is understandable. I'm not a native speaker.

Regards
Lars

PS: It was hard to get here. It should be much easier to find the button to
report a bug! It took me nearly 15 minutes.
PPS: I dont knwo how to attach more than one file!

[Bug 560249] [NEW] ubuntu 10.04 install doesn't provide jme modue for jmicron ethernet

2010-04-10 Thread Lars
Public bug reported:

The 10.04 beta2 amd64 alternate installation CD doesn't provide the jme
module for the one and only ethernet card provided by my notebook.

I managed to load the module from the installation CD after it is

[Bug 566149] Re: Lucid: No USB after resume on Thinkpad X201, T410, T410s, T510, W510

2010-05-18 Thread Lars
I was able to solve this problem in two ways:

1. I compiled the Ubuntu kernel source by following this
tutorial:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile and using the
Method B) for receiving the source. Before I started compiling I applied
the patch Alex had posted in #18.

2. Now as the patch is in the mainline for 2.6.32.13-lucid I was also
able to use the .deb packages from this link: http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.13-lucid/ I guess, the newer ones will
also work.

@Alex Thanks for the effort in solving this bug! And yes, I'm quite
sure, I used the right initrd.

Thanks for the message.
Because I am a less-experienced user, perhaps you could state that more
fully. In the system window I run those commands. Then what? How to I tell
it what to retrieve and where to put it etc, all the stuff specified in the
GUI interface?
