I gave feedback earlier that the problem seemed to have gone away after an update with some packages, but it didn't. My sons only told me later that they typically boot 2 or 3 times until it doesn't freeze. The reboots can only be performed with the power button (hard reboot). Two more things that may be helpful: I really believe this is an AMD issue. Pretty much all similar problems mentioned in Ubuntu Forums give AMD (64 bit) as the hardware. Maybe somebody should take note of this. In my case, I did not have to start any application. The freezes always occurred somewhere during the automatic login, leaving the Heron without panels top and bottom, or a bit later, simply leaving the mouse frozen up. The times it actually did not freeze up during or imediately after the boot, it worked fine afterwards (mostly Mozilla or Konquerer with its build-in flash capability). I have downgraded to 7.10 and leave it at that until a kernel after 2.6.24 is used, since that seems to be the culprit from what I got from the forums.
