No luck with Jaunty beta (2.6.28.8) I will try to compile a 2.6.29

[Bug 350531] Re: SB600/RS690 multiple EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. -> Busybox

2009-04-15 Thread Dan Dart
Tried booting again to Jaunty Beta from USB. Tried disabling SATA,
network, PATA in bios, bootup pauses with no dmesg output for as long
as it did before with the many ext3 messages in a loop and drops to
busybox. Tried various "acpi=off", "hpet=disable", "pci=nomsi" options
all to no avail. After message "Mounting root image" appears it just
stops for a minute. All options drop to busybox.

This is serious! I can't use Ubuntu!
Please mark as critical, because it still doesn't boot AT ALL!

Note: It still does not find modules.dep, which is probably involved.

Proposed openSUSE solution of "acpi=off pci=nomsi" fails completely as
before.

What else can I try?

[Bug 350531] [NEW] Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 does not boot Jaunty

2009-03-28 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10 kernel (2.6.27) succeeds booting but only on hpet=disable

Self-compiled kernels up to 2.6.28.2 succeed to boot on ubuntu 8.04 (no
initrd)

Anything higher (2.6.28.3+ on Ubuntu 8.10) fails to boot with messages
about not being able to find the hard disk, and drops to a prompt
(evidently the hard disk was found but appears in /sys as an error
instead of /dev)

2.6.29 on Ubuntu 8.10 fails to boot, and lists the disks that the ATA
system found (includes hard disk) but gets to a kernel panic because it
cannot find (0,0) or the sda device node.

Ubuntu 9.04 kernel (2.6.28.8 based) fails to boot, dropping to busybox
prompt, even with acpi=off, nolapic, noapic, hpet=disable, edd=on,
"verbose" replacing "splash silent" options. and on expert mode, the
messages when finding an ext3 filesystem loop over and over before it
gets to busybox.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2, SATA300 jumper on Maxtor disk
removed.

AMD Athlon X2 4800+ 2.5GHz virtualisation enabled
2 GB DDR800 RAM

Cheers!

I have not, simply for the fact that I cannot find it. I will however
try with the BIOS setting changed to a different type of hard disk.

Just discovered that the reason that Ubuntu would go to busybox was
that it could not find the squashfs image because I installed it onto

8.10 CD: Boots
8.10 USB: Boots

While 8.10 boots, hpet=disable or acpi=off is still required to boot
else it hangs and even then, I get messages such as:
Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -211219077 ns)
which have been excessive in the past when trying to boot a Xen kernel.
which may or may not be related to this bug.
But I've had that one since Ubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24)

9.04 USB: Does not boot. 80 odd dmesg's about initialising the HD and
finding ext3-FS:

kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.

Then drops to busybox.

[Bug 398723] [NEW] 404 error causes apt-get update to fail

2009-07-13 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

If apt-get update is executed on a bad connection, the apt lists are
full of 404 junk from my router.

When I try to apt-get update on a good connection after that, the junk
inhibits apt's ability to update, causing errors such as these:

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/ubuntu.virginmedia.com_archive_dists_jaunty_universe_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

The file in question is full of BT's 404 junk. I then have to delete the
file to allow the updater to work again.

Can a fix be issued such that if a bad file is returned, the file is
deleted so it can be got again at some later stage without breaking the
updater?

This is a particular problem for newbies. My brother on UNR on an Aspire
One often gets confused by these messages and there is no easy way to
get around them unless I ssh in and delete the files.

[Bug 549949] [NEW] Rhythmbox uninterruptible sleep

2010-03-27 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Oh start of Rhythmbox it appeared in the panel, but clicking it provided no
options.
I tried to kill the process but couldn't. ps aux revealed that it had gone into
uninterruptable sleep (D).
This usually happens in the case of devices taking too long to respond, so I
took out my Hero but it didn't work.
Additionally, my Hero didn't realise it was a computer and didn't offer to
mount the µSD.

[Bug 549962] [NEW] Rhythmbox tray behaviour doesn't make sense

2010-03-27 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The new Lucid Rhythmbox behaviour doesn't make sense.
If I want to pause/etc, it worked well that it was in the right click menu and
that left click once was to show and hide. That made sense.
Now, you have to use an extra click to show, and you can't hide from this menu,
as when it's shown, the menu still says "Show Rhythmbox" - which is useless -
to hide you have to click the X, which is not consistent.

[Bug 549991] [NEW] Laptop fan isn't often sped up when CPU is hot

2010-03-27 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Don't know whose fault this is (BIOS or Ubuntu or Acer) but when the CPU
is under heavy load (e.g. Flash) it regularly goes to above 80C - which
shouldn't be happening, as the fan ought to kick in. Something along the
way is stopping this (whether it be the ACPI or the drivers). I have
noticed it especially on Lucid. In Karmic, when I tilt the laptop to the
right, the fan tends to go on more often, but this doesn't happen on
Lucid. The fan needs to be switched on perhaps above 40 or 50 C, but the
fact that it isn't kicking in above 80 (and Ubuntu regularly shuts down
because of it getting over 85) is worrying.

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5610
Processor: Core Duo T2300 (1.66Ghz x 2)
Tried on: Lucid, Karmic

[Bug 549962] Re: Rhythmbox tray behaviour doesn't make sense

2010-04-16 Thread Dan Dart
Adrian's right - left click should show and hide, right click should
show menu with additional options like other apps. Also, "Show

to click the X.

Additionally, this wrong behaviour also happens in Transmission when
tray is enabled.

[Bug 568986] [NEW] Remote Desktop feature does not work

2010-04-23 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Version: Ubuntu 10.04 RC

Enabled Remote Desktop from System menu.
Vista with Real/TightVNC do not connect. "Connection established" is shown but
no desktop.
It doesn't ask for the password I set either.

I should be able to control my computer like it says I should.

It says that clients can connect to the computer using the address localhost..
which is obviously wrong. The network interface was initialised at boot.
I think what it is that the VNC server should not listen on lo, but
eth0/wlan0/whatever else, or perhaps everything.

[Bug 426992] [NEW] Ubuntu needs an easy intro system

2009-09-09 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu needs a system that appears for bootup for newbies, like "Welcome
to Windows XP".

It should provide video tutorials and introductions on what Ubuntu is,
in newbie talk, what it can do for you, and how to do basic and advanced
tasks. (I can help with videos).

There should be an accessible link to live help (#ubuntu on freenode if
networking is available, a phone call support number if support has been
bought) for more questions the user might have.

It should also provide a menu to help install commonly installed
applications, such as Flash, Java, Skype, Google Earth, Wine (which
should be installed by default if at all possible), extra codecs..
possibly by adding the Medibuntu repository. There should be a dial up
application and all available network drivers to help download, or the
packages in the system ready should it not be allowed to be included, to
prevent such Catch 22 situations as "You need to download a driver for
this network card".

It should also enable autorun for Windows CDs (after a warning), and
some sort of application detection, so it can warn (from WineHQ) that an
application "is not supported and may not work as expected" or "is
expected to work near flawlessly".

This will be a valuable addition to Ubuntu and will help rid new users
of previous annoyances, and should help propel Ubuntu into being the
easiest system yet to use.

Please help spread this!

[Bug 479379] [NEW] Internal sound card farts randomly

2009-11-09 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

After adding snd_es18xx to /etc/modules (as it isn't detected by
default, my sister's old desktop's internal sound card keeps making
random noises (as well as the noises it's meant to make) on Jaunty. Such
noises include various farting and machine gun sounding noises. We have
decreased the volume of everything except PCM and Master and it keeps
doing it. Cracker troubles are also out of the question as this happens
on bootup of a startup CD. Various messages include:

dmesg:
[3.430209] EISA: Probing bus 0 at eisa.0
[3.430224] EISA: Cannot allocate resource for mainboard
[3.430234] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1
[3.430243] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 2
[3.430291] EISA: Detected 0 cards.

I am unable to run lshw or lspci to find the particular sound card. It
is on a Compaq Deskpro, with SN 8020DD271841 and PCI host bridge

[Bug 479395] [NEW] rt61pci wireless card slows down intermittently

2009-11-09 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Sometimes (apparently randomly) my internal PCI wireless card slows down
to a halt. What I mean is that when I am visiting web pages, they
sometimes just appear to be taking a very long time to load (and indeed
to show anything at all). While my Internet connection is not very
reliable, my laptop seems to be able to cope, while my desktop is
apparently trying to load pages, it can load often more reliably. Its
chipset is ipw3945.

I expect for my desktop's speed of Internet transfer to be as fast as my
laptop (as they use the same 64 bit WEP connection), but it often
appears to take a long while loading while the laptop is fine.

Both have Ubuntu Karmic with kubuntu-desktop added.

Is there something wrong with the wireless rt61pci driver since Jaunty?
I am not sure but I may have got these problems then too.

[Bug 498173] [NEW] Acer X193W refresh rate not detected correctly

2009-12-18 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

My X193W monitor on NVIDIA 8500GT was detected to be at 60Hz which is wrong.
This causes flickering and weird lines going down the screen.
Setting the rate to 75Hz fixed this in KDE's System Settings helps, but on
bootup it saves it wrongly, and it goes back to 60Hz until I click into the
Display settings dialog, when instantly it gets it right without altering the
settings.

Also, the NVIDIA driver displays 60Hz as 50Hz in KDE's settings (and
GNOME's), and 75Hz as 51Hz.

In nvidia-settings it displays properly (as 60Hz and 75Hz) but still
won't save the settings because it "cannot parse /etc/X11/xorg.conf" as
it doesn't exist anymore.

[Bug 479395] Re: rt61pci wireless card slows down intermittently

2009-11-13 Thread Dan Dart
This has been happening more often and often when I am browsing the
whole downloads slow right down (e.g. 2000B/s or 0 B/s for a while).

I know it's not my internet because a screen session between my laptop
and desktop is slow, ssh transfers often slow right down or freeze, and
connecting to the router often takes a while on the desktop. They are
used in the same room.

Has the transition from rt61 to rt61pci (rt2x00) changed its behaviour?
Could a module problem explain this strange activity?

[Bug 414897] Re: [karmic] No sound with Realtek ALC883

2009-11-13 Thread Dan Dart
For me, this worked. When I made the new user, the sound was muted as it
was. I turned it up and it worked for the new user, copying .pulse made
it work for me (though Playback/recording through the pulseaudio sound
server is now grayed out in kde settings). Maybe it's wrong signals
going through.

[Bug 458878] [NEW] Logout/Shutdown buttons should reside in System menu as well

2009-10-23 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I think it is non-intuitive to have logout/shutdown buttons under the
user menu. I don't think people will look there to shut down or restart.
They should also be put back under the System menu (so people have a
choice and people can find them).

[Bug 1512135] Re: Cannot add Telegram account to Telepathy

2016-03-11 Thread Dan Dart
Also having this problem.

I looked it up and allegedly this package has morse/telegram related files:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/amd64/kde-config-telepathy-accounts/filelist

however it must rely on another library because I already have this
installed.

What you probably want is this:

https://github.com/TelepathyQt/telepathy-morse

which in turn requires this:

https://github.com/Kaffeine/telegram-qt

After a quick browse through some PPAs I can't find this package readily
available yet.

I can make one for wily with checkinstall but that won't be a proper
package with proper deps.
