[Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

2009-11-28 Thread D. Wegener
I started experiencing something similar today after enabling Karmic
proposed repositories and performing an upgrade. The upgrade pulled in
updates for xserver. The updates seem to be related to the failsafe
server. Reverting to the Karmic released versions of the xserver
packages resolves the problem for me.

I run Kubuntu and use kdm for my login manager. I also have Ubuntu
desktop installed and sometimes use the gnome desktop but not gdm.
However, gdm is installed.

It almost looks like the failsafe server is attempting to startup and
creating a conflict with kdm. If I cancel the low resolution mode
dialog quickly enough, kdm is able to startup and everything is ok.
I've attached my kdm log which shows the conflict with accessing the
display.

I started experiencing this today after applying the latest xserver

graphic mode dialog quickly enough, kdm will restart and run normally.

The problem results in the following messages in the kdm.log file:

Fatal server error:

[Bug 557091] [NEW] ubuntuone-preferences unable to connect to server

2010-04-07 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Since setting up the ubuntuone client the first time on a Lucid Beta

I try to connect, the ubuntu-preferences app shows Synchronization in

[Bug 572011] Re: facebook is always a day or two OLD

2010-05-27 Thread D. Wegener
Problem appears to be that the facebook.py is expecting comments to be
returned as a list and they are actually being returned as a dictionary.
I have been able to fix the problem by changing the comment parsing loop
to use values() for the dictionary. Here is the original code:

if data.get("comments", 0):
  m["comments"] = []
  for item in data["comments"]["comment_list"]:
m["comments"].append({
  "text": item["text"],
  "time": int(mx.DateTime.DateTimeFrom(item["time"]).gmtime()),
  "sender": self._sender(profiles[item["fromid"]]),
})

Changing the for line as follows corrects the problem:

if data.get("comments", 0):
  m["comments"] = []
  for item in data["comments"]["comment_list"].values():
m["comments"].append({
  "text": item["text"],
  "time": int(mx.DateTime.DateTimeFrom(item["time"]).gmtime()),
  "sender": self._sender(profiles[item["fromid"]]),
})

[Bug 542950] [NEW] Screen corruption on startup

2010-03-20 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm testing out the Lucid beta by booting from a USB drive. Initial
splash screen displays progress. When boot up sequence switches to the
X display, the screen becomes corrupted. There are portions of the
screen from the last time the system ran, but they are scattered across
the screen. I can hear the Ubuntu startup sounds, so the system is
coming up. However, I'm not able to access anything on the screen so I
can't open a terminal to enter any commands. I'm also not able to
switch to a tty. Hitting ctrl-alt-f1 - f6 do nothing.

Any clues on how I can debug this.

Live disk is AMD 64 version running on an Athlon 64 with an Nvidia
GeForce 6100 graphics card

[Bug 414572] Re: KDE Microblogs plasmoid does not show friend timelines nor public timeline

2009-09-10 Thread D. Wegener
After performing an apt-get -compile on the source package, the
resulting plasma-widgets-addons deb package contains a
plasma_applets_microblog.so that doesn't work. The packaged library has
been stripped as part of the package build process. However, the shared
library built in the output directory of the compile works correctly.
The difference between these would seem to the stripping process that
removes the debug info from the shared libraries. Perhaps, there is
something not defined properly for the stripping of this library.

[Bug 414572] Re: KDE Microblogs plasmoid does not show friend timelines nor public timeline

2009-10-06 Thread D. Wegener
Additional information. It seems to have something to do with the
kubuntu_02_microblog_default_configuration.diff. This diff appears in revision
29 of the lp:~kubuntu-members/kdeplasma-addons/ubuntu branch. The following
code in the downloadHistory method was changed:
+-if (m_includeFriends) {
+-query = QString("TimelineWithFriends:%...@%2");
+-} else {
+ query = QString("Timeline:%...@%2");
+ }

The new code is:
++if (m_password.isEmpty()) {
++query = QString("NoAuth:%...@%2");
++} else if ( m_includeFriends ) {
+ query = QString("Timeline:%...@%2");
+ }

The result is that an empty password results in a NoAuth query, If
Include Friends is checked, the query is Timeline when it should be
TimelineWithFriends. If Include Friends isn't checked, then no query is
set.

The code should probably be changed to:
++if (m_password.isEmpty()) {
++query = QString("NoAuth:%...@%2");
++} else if ( m_includeFriends ) {
+ query = QString("TimelineWithFriends:%...@%2");
+-} else {
+ query = QString("Timeline:%...@%2");
+ }

There also seems to be a bug in setting the Configure... button state. It
isn't being cleared. The setAuthRequired method seems to be used to turn this
button on and off. My best guess is that the method should be called in the
dataUpdated method when the update query was successful.

This looks to be a problem with the binary build. I tried to debug this

[Bug 441088] Re: devkit-disks-part-id crashed with SIGSEGV in v4l1_open()

2009-10-11 Thread D. Wegener
Ouput to commands attached. During the upgrade process from Jaunty to
Karmic, I couldn't get my system to boot and performed a clean install
of Karmic. This completely changed my partitions defined/used on my
hard drives. This output is based on the current configuration of the
hardisks. I don't remember if the reported crash occurred before or
after the clean install, so this data may not reflect the state of the
system when the crash occurred.

Previously, I had logical volumes for my file systems. Now, I have
standard partitions.

[Bug 414572] Re: KDE Microblogs plasmoid does not show friend timelines nor public timeline

2009-10-12 Thread D. Wegener
The fix does not solve the problem of missing friend tweets. The wrong query
string is still being used in the downloadHistory method in microblog.cpp. The
code should look something like this.
if (m_password.isEmpty()) {
query = Qstring("NoAuth:%...@2");
} else if (m_includeFriends) {
query = QString("TimelineWithFriends:%...@2");
} else {
query = QString("Timeline:%...@2");
}

[Bug 414572] Re: KDE Microblogs plasmoid does not show friend timelines nor public timeline

2009-10-24 Thread D. Wegener
It would really be nice for this bug to be fixed prior to the release of
Karmic. Kubuntu Karmic is being advertised as social from the start.
The twitter support is a integral part of Kubuntu. I've posted the code
that fixes the problem a couple of times. Can someone give me some
advice on how I can get the fixed code included in the Karmic
kdeplasma_addons package. The file that needs to be changed is
02_microblog_default_configuration.diff. The query string in the
Microblog::downloadHistory method isn't getting set properly.
Currently, the only query strings that are ever set are "NoAuth:" and
"Timeline:". The "Timeline:" string is getting set incorrectly. It is
getting set after a check to see if include friends is turned on. The
correct string for include friends is "TimelineWithFriends:".

As mentioned, the current code only sets one of two strings. No query
string is set if include friends is not selected in the configuration.
This was the cause of a plasma desktop crash that has since been
addressed in the base KDE source. That fix prevented the crash, but had
no effect on the display of friend tweets.

[Bug 973181] Re: Dash - System commands presence confuse the definition of App

2012-04-22 Thread D. Wegener
I couldn't disagree more with this bug. The session commands (logout,
restart, shutdown, etc) definitively belong in the application lens.
The whole point of the lens is to provide a single point of entry to the
system. You hit super, start typing, and hit enter when you choice
becomes the first one in the list.

The rest of this post is going to be pretty much a rant, but that is
because of how frustrating the effects of these decisions are on the
useability of the system from an experienced users perspective.

You have broken my system yet again. Please, Please, Please pick with a
direction and stick with it. I DON'T WANT TO COMPLETELY RELEARN MY
WORKFLOW WITH EACH NEW RELEASE. STOP IT.

I have been running a pre-release version of Precise for some time.
This behavior just recently changed. This should not be a last minute
addition to a Long Term Release. It basically means that if we don't
like it, we have not input to get it changed. Another F-U from the
Ubuntu Design gods. These changes need to be made available to the
community at large well ahead of feature freezes and release candidates.

The initial write up of this bug indicates that some of these commands
are available in the HUD. If so, I can't find them. Even if they are
available there it means that you have to learn yet another interface to
use them. There should not be 15 different interfaces that the user
needs to learn to use in order to accomplish things on the system.

This issue has been marked as a duplicate of a private bug. That
prevents me from looking at the bug to confirm it is a duplicate or to
see any comments/status of the bug to determine when it might be fixed
or work arounds.

I'm not sure what it means for a bug to be private, but could someone
look at making the bug public so I can see it?

I have also noticed that suspend no longer works on netbook where this
error occurs. When invoking suspend, screen blanks out, but system
doesn't seem to completely suspend. Fan continues to run. System won't
come out of suspend. I have to hard power off system.

I wasn't sure which version to check. I used the link to the most
current version in the Mainline Kernel Mapping section. The resulting
version is:

uname -a
Linux dpwegener-laptop 3.4.0-999-generic #201204010405 SMP Sun Apr 1 08:12:57

There was no Oops on boot and asus_wmi appears to load successfully:

[   41.588701] asus_wmi: Initialization: 0x0

[ 41.901672] asus_wmi: Backlight controlled by ACPI video driver

[Bug 970286] Re: Kernel Oops - BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null); EIP is at asus_new_rfkill+0x99/0xf0 [asus_wmi]

2012-04-01 Thread D. Wegener
+ Does this oops impact using the computer in anyway?
It prevents the computer from successfully entering Suspend mode. Attempting
to enter Suspend mode locks up the computer and the computer must be hard
powered off. (see comment #4)

+ Did you test this in a prior release and did it oops?
The Oops first appeared when I installed linux-image-3.2.0-21-generic. When
booting with the previous version (3.2.0-20-generic) there is no Oops and
Suspend/Resume work normally. (see comment #5)

2012-04-01 Thread D. Wegener
I can give it a try. I have built kernels in the past but that was many
years ago. I'm running on a netbook, so I don't have a great deal of
CPU power so I can't guarantee anything or give an estimate on when I
can complete the process.

2012-04-01 Thread D. Wegener
I'm starting to get lost. I'm not sure I'm doing the bisect correctly.
It appears to have picked a version outside of the versions I'm trying
to bisect. I'm also getting a build error when trying to build the
kernel that bisect picked.

check-config:
/home/dpwegener/precise/ubuntu-precise/debian/build/build-generic/.config:
loading config
check-config:
/home/dpwegener/precise/ubuntu-precise/debian.master/config/enforce: loading
checks
check-config: FAIL: value CONFIG_SECURITY_YAMA y
check-config: 37/38 checks passed -- exit 1
make: *** [config-prepare-check-generic] Error 1

I don't know where to go from here. If someone else can perform the
bisect, I'm willing to try out the kernels in the process.

2012-04-03 Thread D. Wegener
I'm not able to perform the bisect. I restarted from scratch and tried
to build the most recent kernel before attempting any bisect operation.
The build is running on my computer, but it is going quite slow. I let
it run for 1.5 hours the first night before I had to stop it to
shutdown. I then restarted it the next night. It continued from where
it had stopped initially, but after more than 2 hours I had to stop it
again so I don't know the exact time it takes to build, but it is
pushing 4 hours at this point.

At this rate, I wouldn't be able to do more than one bisect a day. The
original bisect status showed over 850 commits that needed to be
bisected. It would take me a couple of weeks to complete the process.

Andrew, I tried the kernel you requested ( 3.2.14-030214-generic). I

[Bug 953634] Re: Super key doesn't bring up Dash

2012-03-12 Thread D. Wegener
No, it doesn't appear when releasing the Super key. It doesn't matter
how long I hold the key down. I've tried quickly tapping as well as
holding it down till the Launcher appears and then release the key. It
never shows.

I've found the launcher Super->Tab sequence that goes through the
Launcher icons. Hitting Super->Tab selects the Dash icon and brings up
the Dash. However, the Super key is supposed to bring the Dash up by
itself.

Additional update. Tonight I installed new updates and Unity
5.6.0-0ubuntu3 was installed. Now, the first time I press/release the
Super key after login, the Dash is brought up. Subsequent attempts to
bring up the Dash using the Super key are un-successful. The Dash is
only brought up on the first invocation.

I've tried tapping at various different speeds. Hit and immediately
release all the way to hit till Launcher is displayed and release. It
doesn't matter, the Dash doesn't show after first time following a
login.

Super-a brings up the Application lens, Super-f brings up the files
lens, Super-m brings up the music lens, and Super-tab brings up the Dash

[Bug 953089] Re: Unity 5.6: key bindings (such as Super) don't work on empty workspace

2012-03-14 Thread D. Wegener
In my case, I can get the Dash to come once using Super if I wait for
all processing to settle down after login. But I can't get Super to
bring up the Dash after that. In fact, Super won't close the Dash. I
have to use ESC to close the Dash. I'm running System Load Indicator in
the panel and I can see that pressing Super does result in a spike in
CPU usage.

Steps to reproduce problem:
Login.
Wait till System Load Indicator shows that system is essentially idle.
Press/Release the Super key.
Dash is displayed
Select an application to run or close with ESC
Press/Relese the Super key
NO Dash is displayed, but System Load indicates CPU spike.

It doesn't matter whether there is an application visible or whether
only the Desktop is visible. The Dash doesn't come up on the Super key.

I have the Launcher set to Auto Hide and I have reduced the size of the
Launcher icons to better fit my Netbook screen (1024x600). I have icons
visible on my Desktop screen.

[Bug 1515849] [NEW] Desktop crashed while mousing over Launcher

2015-11-12 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

I run Ubuntu on a laptop. Recently I have experienced crashes of the
desktop after opening up the laptop and mousing over the Launcher. I
have the Launcher set to auto hide. The Launcher is longer then the
window so normally scrolls when mouse get to the bottom of the window.
Each time there has been a crash, I've been trying to mouse down to
scroll to the launcher icons that are off the bottom of the screen.

The crash restarts to the login prompt. After logging back in, the
launcher works as expected.

initially displayed then a slow black screen wash happened from top to
bottom. I waited several seconds and eventually the desktop came back
with no panel or launcher. I received a crash popup and tried to send
it, but the crash reporting process never completed.

I was able to restart X and login using the 2d desktop. The following is an
excerpt from a crash file in /var/crash I can send the entire crash file if
needed  it is over 7mb.:

[Bug 1041584] [NEW] /usr/bin/X crashed with Signal 11

2012-08-25 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

For the past week or so, I've been getting 2 or 3 X server crashes a day
on my computer. After the crash, I normally get an apport popup and
walk through the dialogs in an attempt to report the crash. Based on
what I've read, the 12.04 release process is supposed to report these
crashes invisibly to the user. I'm not sure if these crashes are
getting reported since the new process is silent as to whether the
reporting is successful or not. There is also very little information
regarding the crash.

I have found a report in the /var/crash directory that indicates a
Signal 11. Here is the section of the report with the signal
identified.

The crashes don't have anything in common other than the computer is working
fine and then the screen goes black and the login screen is displayed.

[Bug 801841] Re: Discover card not working

2011-12-06 Thread D. Wegener
Its unfortunate that Canonical hasn't fixed this problem yet. I'm
unable to purchase software in the software center because of this bug.
Canonical is giving up revenue for themselves as well as the developers
who are trying to make some money off of their work.

[Bug 916799] [NEW] Blank line in previously installed packagedescription causes 12.04 upgrade failurt

2012-01-15 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

While attempting to upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 the version of dpkg used
by Ubuntu was upgraded. The new version was unable to parse my
/var/lib/dpkg/status and /var/lib/dpkg/available files.  Under 11.10, I
had installed a package from Lexmark for a printer driver that had a
blank line in the package description field. The old version of dpkg
was apparently able to parse the file with the blank line. However,
when the new version encountered the files. any further package updates
failed and the update process proceeded to the cleanup/reboot phase.

My system was usable following the reboot, and I was able to find the
blank lines and manually edit them to allow dpkg to start working again.
There were some broken packages as a result of the failed upgrade. I
was able to fix them using apt-get install -f. I was then able to
complete the upgrade with an apt-get dist-upgrade.

There may need to be some checks added to the upgrade procedure to
prevent upgrade failures when a package description has a blank line.

[Bug 916799] Re: Blank line in previously installed packagedescription causes 12.04 upgrade failurt

2012-01-16 Thread D. Wegener
The package is provided by Lexmark for their printers. It is licensed
by them and I'm not sure I'm allowed to post it here. The version I had
installed no longer appears to be available on their support site.

I could probably send the file to you directly, but I don't think I'm
allowed to post it on the site.

Their installation package is shipped an a self extracting shell script with
the .deb packaged inside. Attempting to re-install the package now produces
the following error:

dpkg: error processing lexmark-inkjet-09-driver-1.5-1.i386.deb (--install):
 parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/control' near line 9 package
'lexmark-inkjet-09-driver':
 blank line in value of field 'Description'
Errors were encountered while processing:
 lexmark-inkjet-09-driver-1.5-1.i386.deb

Running dpkg --info on the .deb produces the following:

 Package: lexmark-inkjet-09-driver
 Version: 1.5-1
 Section: non-free
 Priority: optional
 Architecture: i386
 Installed-Size:
 Maintainer: build
 Description:
  Lexmark Series Drivers Package

  This package contains the Lexmark Series Drivers. This is
  a copyrighted package, please refer to the copyright notice
  for details about using this product.

The blank line appears after the first line of the Description.

Here is how the packages entry appears in the status file prior to the
upgrade:

Package: lexmark-inkjet-09-driver
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: non-free
Maintainer: build
Architecture: i386
Version: 1.5-1
Description:
 Lexmark Series Drivers Package

 This package contains the Lexmark Series Drivers. This is
 a copyrighted package, please refer to the copyright notice
 for details about using this product.

Again the blank line appears in the description.

Editing the file doesn't show any other characters on the line (no tabs,
spaces, etc) It appears to be just a new line.

[Bug 923605] [NEW] Wireless network card unable to connect to router with 3.2.0-12 kernel

2012-01-29 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

Tonight I updated my 12.04 install with the latest kernel image (linux-
image-3.2.0-12-generic). After a reboot, my network card couldn't
connect to my wireless router. Tried rebooting a couple of times
without success. Removed network definition and tried re-adding but
couldn't get it to work. Booting back into the 3.2.0-11 kernal allows
the network card to connect.

Problem seems to be with the DHCP. Dhclient is unable to get a response
to a DHCPDISCOVER or a DHCPREQUEST call. Here are the relevant lines

[Bug 923512] Re: ath9k wireless stopped working after kernel upgrade to 3.2.0-12

Booting back into the 3.2.0-11 kernel fixes the problem so it appears to
be an issue introduced in 3.2.0-12.

[Bug 927441] [NEW] Far left character in panel (and launcher popups) distorted

2012-02-05 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

After one of the recent Precise updates, I have noticed that the first
character in the Unity panel is distorted. It almost looks like the
character is being partially offset by a couple of pixels. A similar
issue shows up in the popups on icons in the Unity launcher when
hovering over the icon.

The distortion is also visible on the window close icon when the mouse
is on the Unity Panel and the icons and menu are displayed.

I have screen shots of each distortion attached.

[Bug 929303] [NEW] Launcher auto hide behavior broken in 5.2.0-0ubuntu3

2012-02-08 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

Version 5.2.0-0ubuntu3 broke the auto hide behavior of the launcher.
With auto hide turned on, the launcher will only appear when "pushing"
the mouse against the left edge. It is no longer displayed if there are
no windows in the launcher area of the screen. If auto hide is turned
off, full screen windows will not be full screen. They will be narrowed
by the width of the launcher.

This is a serious regression. The auto hide behavior should behave as
it has for some time. If a window would be obscured by the launcher it
should hide. If the launcher can be fully displayed without covering a
window, it should be displayed.

[Bug 928826] Re: Autohide broken (always hides)

2012-02-09 Thread D. Wegener
I'm very disappointed that this feature has been redacted by Mr.
Shuttleworth. I decided to accept Unity on my netbook specifically
because of this feature.

I'm tired of Mr. Shuttleworth constantly trying to make my desktop
look/behave like his. These constant disruptions to the desktop
behavior (moving close icon, introducing Unity, preventing the panel
from hiding, removing hovers from panel icons, universal menu, adding
Dodge mode to launcher, removing Dodge mode from launcher) are becoming
quite tedious and disconcerting.

I'm tired of having to relearn how to use my PC every time I upgrade to
a new Ubuntu version.

[Bug 845671] [NEW] Oneiric doesn't have ability to customize theme

2011-09-09 Thread D. Wegener
Public bug reported:

The Oneiric beta release has the ability to select different themes.
However, this version of Ubuntu no longer has the ability to customize
the theme. Natty had the ability to select things like the
background/foreground color of tool tips, windows, etc. It is important
to be able to adjust these colors.

I use Eclipse to develop on Linux and some of the popup windows use
system default colors for the background. The debugger tool tip windows
showing variable values is one instance. The foreground color is very
close to the system background color and you need to change the Ubuntu
colors in order to see the data. If you don't, the display is black on
black and can't be read.

Releasing Oneiric without this ability will prevent me from upgrading.

[Bug 825939] Re: No easy way to change theme

2011-10-14 Thread D. Wegener
I'm very disappointed that the Ubuntu developers allowed this release to
proceed with such a basic requirement missing. Not allowing users to
customize their desktop is unacceptable. Because of this regression, I
will not be upgrading to the 11.10. In a number of the related bugs, a
claim is made that this is an upstream issue and the problem needs to be
brought up there. This is a cop out by the Ubuntu developers. Ubuntu
delivers the desktop. They need to insure that it is functional for
their users. Blaming someone else for their poor decisions reflects
poorly on them and on their ability to meet their users needs.

[Bug 618587] Re: eclipse does not work with appmenu

2010-10-30 Thread D. Wegener
I am using Eclipse on a netbook and would like to use the indicator
appmenu so save screen real estate. When running Lucid, it was possible
to get menus to display by pressing Alt-F for file, etc. Once
displayed, the menu items would remain until Eclipse was restarted.
Under Maverick, it isn't possible to get any menus to display.
