[Bug 210804] Re: Clicking link in email does not open browser

2008-07-18 Thread Clem
Hi All,

I have been unable to click on any links in Thunderbird since Kubuntu
8.04, and have any of them work. I have to copy and paste them directly
into Firefox. I have tried to play around with the preferences in
Thunderbird, but it did not make any difference. I am using Firefox
2.0.0.15, and Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, in Kubuntu 8.04.1, and it is
frustrating that this isn't at a higher priority for fixing. It has
been happening since Kubuntu 8.04, and I am running 3.5.9 KDE not 4.

[Bug 222115] [NEW] Kubuntu 8.04 Grub Error 22 or no partitions found when booting

2008-04-25 Thread Clem
Public bug reported:

Hi All,

I installed Kubuntu 8.04 yesterday, and it installed all the files, as I
was able to mount the partition from PCLinux 2008. I have 2 hard
drives, 1 IDE for Windows XP, and 1 new Sata2 for Linux. I wanted to
try Kubuntu, and see if what changes have been made, and to give it a
fair trial I wanted to install it after running it from live cd. The
first time I put grub on the partion that I had created, the second
install I put it on the first hard drive or MBR. I let Kubuntu follow
it's default install options the second time. Both trials failed, at
first it would not even boot into Kubuntu's menu.lst, but that changed
after I changed the hd1 to hd0. But that is as far as it would go, it
would not boot into WindowsXP, or into Kubuntu or PCLinux.

I had to use the LiveCD for PCLinux, and redo my MBR to recover my
partitions as it was broken well. The errors I kept encountering in
Grub was error 22 after choosing the Kubuntu partition. The WindowsXP
disc would say something like can not execute command or something like
that, sorry I didn't write it down. I just thought I would give you
some feedback, and help out the community. I really liked the Kubuntu
forums, and find there is a lot of good will there and encouragement.
If you need any more information please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks for your help!

[Bug 222115] Re: Kubuntu 8.04 Grub Error 22 or no partitions found when booting

2008-04-25 Thread Clem
Hi Patrick and All, I will follow your guide, and give as much
information as I can to help Ubuntu be a better Ubuntu in the future. I
cut my teeth in Linux with Ubuntu, and have tried many others distro's
since then. Also, I had tried an Ubuntu 8.04 beta install, and the same
thing happened. It was unable to recognize my hard drives or partitions
or boot into them, especially when using the Sata2 drive.

1.Specific Steps. Downloaded Kubuntu 8.04 via p2p with Transmission. Burned
disc with K3B, and ran check media disc prior to installing or using LiveCD
with your check media option...it passed. I tried to install Kubuntu 8.04
yesterday, April 24, 2008 twice. The first time I created a root partition,
and had Kubuntu installed to that partition. I had the bootloader installed to
boot from that partition. This was all on a new 250G Sata2 drive. I checked
the install, and I was able to mount the partition from PCLinuxOS. My
partition was called sdb3, and the hard drive partition I installed grub to was
(hd1,2). The Sata drive is hd1, and the IDE drive is hd0. The choices were
all default in the installer except for the manual hard drive partitions, and
where to put the boot loader. I have a Linux already on this drive, and I
wanted to test Kubuntu on another partition. So I created a single 30G root
partition. I had a swap already created from before so it just used that
during the install.
2.Behavior I expected...I expected it to recognize my partitions and drives,
and to be able to boot into it after I had redone my MBR from PCLinuxOS. Grub
did recognized Ubuntu, but it I was not able to boot into Kubuntu ever, and
could not boot into other Linux partitions or into WindowsXP using the Ubuntu
grub menu. PCLinuxOS could load itself, and Windows, but not Kubuntu. Error
22 kept coming up.
3.Behavior I actually encountered... Grub Error 22 or partitions not recognized
for all Linuxes, and something like cannot execute command when trying to load
WindowsXP.

The second time I just went with the default install, and installed it
into the same partition sdb3, but let it overwrite my MBR at (hd0,0) in
grub, thinking this was the problem. It didn't work either. The only
time I was able to load Kubuntu's Grub menu.lst was when I changed the
(hd1,2) to (hd0,2), but it would still give me Error 22's when trying to
boot into Linux and not able to execute command messages when trying to
boot into Windows

I hope this is detailed enough, as I have since deleted the partition,
and the references to Ubuntu in my PCLinuxOS grub menu list, and this is
all I can recall. I will attach my present grub menu.lst in hopes it
may be helpful in getting Kubuntu working on my Sata drive.

Thanks for your help!

[Bug 546549] Re: udisks-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in fork()

I had the same kind of problems :
- gvfs-gdu-volume is crashing and restarting all time long
- dbus-daemon and udisks-daemon take 26% and 16% of cpu
- powerd is crashing continuously, dmesg is the folloing :

error 4 in libdbus-1.so.3.4.0[659000+37000]

- gnome-settings-daemon is failing to call services on DBUS, and
.xsession-error is continuously filled with the following error messages
:

 (gnome-settings-daemon:19905): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **:
invoking List() failed for type GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu:

- gnome-panel freezes after gdm login, and I have to kill it for a new
gnome-panel process to be launched

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I think something is really wrong
here with dbus...
Thanks a lot by advance

[Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-18 Thread Clem
Thanks for your quick response.

I didn't manage to have gvfs-gdu-volume crashing again, actually most of
the time it simply exits continuously, with the following error message
:

(process:19554): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitorDaemon-WARNING **: cannot add
match rule
'type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.DBus',member='NameOwnerChanged',arg0=':1.45'':
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message
bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken.

However, the upowerd daemon really crashes continuously, with the
following backtrace :

(upowerd:22525): GLib-WARNING **: GError set over the top of a previous GError
or uninitialized memory.
This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before

[Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-19 Thread Clem
I start my session via gdm,

dbus-monitor --session shows :
signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=:1.0 serial=2
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired
   string ":1.0"
method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=3
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=AddMatch
   string "type='method_call'"
method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=4

method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=5

However, dbus --system show non-stop scrolling messages:

[Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-19 Thread Clem
Yes it does exactly the same.
I tried reinstalling the entire system from scratch, with same results.
I tried to replace metacity with other (xfwm), and replace gnome with xfce.
In the latter case, all is fine until some process try to access gvfs (open a
"open" window from firefox for example), then the problem comes back again.

Re: [Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-20 Thread Clem
the only thing I changed is switching from utf8 to iso-8859-1, but i've just
checked at the moment by switching back to UT8, and the problem is here
again.
as workaround, I'm using KDE, where I don't see the gvfs-gdu-volume
crashing. However, /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd and /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon
are running ok with KDE...

2010-05-21 Thread Clem
do you know if there is a way to disable completely gvfs please ?
now, even under KDE, with certain open-file dialogs, the gvfs-gdu-volume
process starts again to loop-and-crash...
thanks a lot

2010-05-27 Thread Clem
for information, I found a workaround by removing the file
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.UDisks.conf
removable media automount doesn't work any more, but gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor is
not started.

[Bug 924363] [NEW] pulseaudio balance issues

2012-01-31 Thread Clem
Public bug reported:

Since today, balance control in gnome-volume-control gives weird results with
headphones :
- whith centered balance, sound is far away, and only few instruments can be
heard (ex : no voice, no bass, only drums and back voices)
- while left or right adjusted, the volume stays equal in both speakers of the
headphone. The sound is different from middle position : the voices are here,
the instruments heard are different ones (no battery but bass is here), and the
whole sound looks likes a mono sent to both speakers...

come here to see the fix , I believe it importance should be more than
medium.

[Bug 117713] Re: not proper dismounting for WD passport harddrive (making noise when unplug)

2007-06-12 Thread clem-vangelis
i actually didn't notice this problem and i always unmount my hardrive
using this script: ( of course change /dev/sdb1 by your harddrive )

#!/bin/sh
pumount /dev/sdb1
#wait for mtab to be updated
sleep 3
#we search an occurency of our harddrive in mtab
UMOUNT=`grep '/dev/sdb1' /etc/mtab | wc -c`
if [ $UMOUNT -eq 0 ]
then
   #we sync the harddrive
   sdparm --command=sync /dev/sdb1
   #we can spindown the hardrive
   sdparm --command=stop /dev/sdb1
zenity --info --title="Info" --text="You can unplug your Hardrive !"
else
zenity --error --title="Info" --text="It seems your harddrive isn't
unmounted , unmount it then try again"
fi

you can modify it by adding this at the start :
#unmount
pumount /dev/sdb1
#mount
pmount /dev/sdb1
#unmount
pumount /dev/sdb1

it use pmount , sdparm and zenity ( sudo aptitude install pmount zenity
sdparm ) then simply make it executable and launch it

that's really strange 'cause i have exactly the same hardrive ( western
digital passport II 160G ) and i don't have this kind of problem, i
copied a lot of avis on it and no one of them has disapearred after
unmounting it . anyway in a "normal" shutdown for this disk it have to
park head and stop cylinders and actually this is not the case , i think
this issue could be dangerous for the harddrive itself , i hope devs
will have a look at this bug.

[Bug 117713] not proper dismounting for WD passport harddrive (making noise when unplug)

2007-05-30 Thread clem-vangelis
Public bug reported:

Try to dismount a USB external Western digital passport harddrive , it
will be ok but the cylinders will be still rotating , then if you unplug
your hardrrive it'll do a strange noise like a violent hard drive
parking. ( in Microsoft windows the eject the device safely option stop
the heads ) at the moment the only solution to stop properly the hard
drive is tu use sdparm , here is the script :

#!/bin/sh
WD=/dev/sdb1
sudo umount $WD
if [ $? -eq 0 ]
then
echo Stopping heads
#Stop properly the heads and cylinders
sdparm --command=stop $WD
else
echo Unmount Failed !

[Bug 571069] [NEW] Customizable Panels work horribly on left and right sides.

2010-04-27 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

Customizable Panels work horribly on left and right sides. i.e. Window
List 2.28.0 does not manage the windows effectively. More than 5 windows
open the buttons become very small even though the "applet" only takes
up 1/3 of the available space. And when auto hide is turned on, it goes
away, then comes with graphics so blurred you can not see any buttons at
all. Having this fix in the next system up date for 9.10 would be much
appreciated. Thank you and God bless.

[Bug 1123763] [NEW] Veromix volume control broken by update.

2013-02-12 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

I have been unable to find any way to manage my volume (PulseAudio) in
the stock widgets, or the ones available for download from "get more"
app. As well as searching around the internet in general.

This seems to be the best one available -
http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php?content=116676 - But it is
broken by each suquenctial update of KDE itself. And from what the
maintainer says, it has to do with how KDE deals with python.

Please either make it so that widget don't break with each update (so
that no longer developed widgets don't sadly die) or for a quick fix
for this issue. Actually include a simple way of controlling sound, as
well as music players that minimize to the sound menu's.

I don't know how to add log info, but the app just has an "X" bubble in
the place of its icon immediately when added.

Install them and still getting the same "Could not create python

I did try to "sudo apt-get install" the packages that the forum you

searching. Is there a repo that supplies them?

Thank you for the help.

[Bug 879792] Re: the window I had open crashed

2011-10-22 Thread Daniel Clem
** Description changed:

I had one window with 2 tabs open. I right clicked on a .py file, then
selected "open with other application". The dialog box came up, and all
it showed was gedit, so I just canceled out of it. Then both the dialog
box and the window with 2 tabs both dissappeared ( I assume it was a
- crash ).
+ crash ). And Yes this is a fresh install, only about a couple days ago.

[Bug 945603] Re: lxkeymap crashed with IndexError in finish_initializing(): list index out of range

2012-07-08 Thread Daniel Clem
For some reason my system said the bug I was trying to report (via the
automatic bug reporter) was the same as this bug. But from the
description, its not because the lxkeymap thing won't even start for me
at all. I am using CR-48 Chrome notebook. the CPU is a Intel Atom model
N455 @ 1.66GHz if that helps.

Also, I will probably try to find how to report another bug on Lubuntu
in general. Because I had a strange issue in package management. I
wanted to uninstall Chromium from Lubuntu (cause I prefer Midori, much
lighter, faster, and has all the needed extensions included by default)
But when I did remove Chromium, Firefox was automatically installed. I
have no idea why. So I uninstalled Firefox, and then Epiphany was
install (also called "Web"), I uninstalled Epiphany, then for some
reason, Rhythmbox was installed. And it continued to get more strange
from there. The only way I was able to solve this, was use Synaptic, and
each time a package was marked to be installed because I was removing
another, I "unmarked".

It took about 10 or 15 minutes, but finally got all the strange packages
removed. But it was very frustrating to have to go through all that just
cause I wanted to remove Chromium. >:-(

That aside, I am still willing to stick with Lubuntu for a while, cause
it is WAY too fast to give up on it so easily. Like, crazy insane fast.
I may actually put it on my Bigger machine, solely of the speed.

[Bug 880626] Re: eog should consider menubar size when creating windows to avoid scaling

2011-12-04 Thread Daniel Clem
Yup I'll second that, it seems to do "ok" under Unity with the global
menu. but not under Gnome shell or Gnome2.3 with out a global menu.

I hope things can be re-done to have the window automatically resize as
the status bar and toolbar are enabled or disabled, and when switching
between images using arrow keys. Possible? I think so :-)

[Bug 897055] Re: Unable to load typewriter sounds

2011-12-04 Thread Daniel Clem
Just wanted to say that the latest update fixed the typewriter sounds
for me :-D. I don't know what the update did. But I never did anything
to add the "libsdl1.2-mixer" package cause I couldn't find it anywhere.

Thank you for all your work!!!
  God Bless,
 Daniel

[Bug 897055] [NEW] Unable to load typewriter sounds

2011-11-27 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

I'm running Elementary OS, which is based on Ubuntu 10.10 with very few
differences. The typewriter sounds work perfectly on my Desktop that is
running the same version of Elementary OS, but don't work at all on this
Elementary OS laptop. Despite the fact that when testing Ubuntu 11.10 on
this machine, the typewriter sounds worked perfect. I tried reinstalling
and doing updates. But no difference. Any help to fixing this would be
very much appreciated.

  God Bless,
     Clem

Can you tell me where to find the "libsdl1.2-mixer" package? Its not in

May I ask why the sounds became 100% optional by default?

[Bug 882948] [NEW] Window not resizing to the picture correctly

2011-10-28 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

No matter what when opening an image, there are always the ugly black
bars on both sides of any image. Disabling both the status bar and
toolbar helps a little, and using a "global menu" makes it ALOT better.
But alot of times there still a clear black line on one side or the
other, even though "Best fit" is selected. I can manually resize the
window and I am able to get the window to just the perfect size so there
are no black bars any where.

I am a BIG stickler for this cause I love having a borderless window
theme. and when opening a picture and seeing black on one side or
another, it just looks plain ugly :/ I Love Eye of Gnome cause it does
the best at auto resizing. and being able to totally take away
everything in the window but the title bar, (any good ways of making
that dissapper too? :-P ) makes an average pic look really great, and a
High Res pic look Jaw Dropping!!

[Bug 882948] Re: Window not resizing to the picture correctly

2011-10-28 Thread Daniel Clem
I think its possibly the same bug, the other one is more technical bout
the reason it happens.

But even when the tool bar and the status bar are turned off and the a
Global menu is used making nothing but the title bar show, there will
still be a one or 2 pixel wide bar on either left or right side.

Not a huge deal, but a thing that add more to a list of appearance
distractions .

P.S. this 1 to 2 pixel black bar goes away by very carefully resizing
the window. I have never owned a Apple Mac, and don't ever plan to. But
certain details of their design a very much admire and think look very
gorgeous.

[Bug 660917] Re: Screen brightness adjustment does not change at all on my Acer Aspire Timeline 5810TZ

2011-10-20 Thread Daniel Clem
I just installed Oneiric Ocelot and this issue is still present. NOTHING
I do changes the brightness. (I don't know how find a conf file and
change the brightness variable, because I shouldn't have to)

This has been the same ever since 10.04. Back in 9.10 I could change the
brightness using the function keys, so you drop support for hardware
that was less than a year old at the time? WHY???

Even installing Ubuntu Tweak on every release and trying to adjust the
brightness in there for charching and battary modes. NOTHING changes it.

I am not a programmer or a tech kind of guy. I wish I could help find
and fix the issue. But I only started using Ubuntu 9.10 cause I was
googling for a way to fix an old machine that stopped recognizing the
DVD drive (under Windows) . Installing Ubuntu fixed this issue
completely and no matter what machine I put Ubuntu 9.10 on it worked
beautifully with full support and everything just worked. So not only is
Ubuntu's releases getting uglier (HATE purple) Its dropping support for
hardware??

[Bug 657494] Re: software-center crashed with DBusException in call_blocking()

2010-12-16 Thread Daniel Clem
I got an email asking me to check if this bug is still affecting me
after the latest updates, but I can't check it for 2 reasons, It was
happening when I was using a Ubuntu Live USB stick and downloading and
updating to the lastest patches would fill up the space on the stick so
I never can update it, and even if I could, I kept that USB stick in my
wallet and I recently lost my wallet!! really ticked me off actually
cause those came in handy sometimes for diagnostic purposes or making a
Dead computer come back to life.

[Bug 592859] Re: New Message Notifications in Empathy are not Attention-Grabbing Enough

2011-03-25 Thread Daniel Clem
I would like to jump on this band wagon too. I prefer Pidgin for this
and other reasons. Such as all the various plugins, customizable sounds,
and the abilitiy to save custom Smiley Icons, Including animated ones.
WHICH I LOVE.

So I will confirm this and will also seach for the Smiley Icon bug here
on launchpad. If I can't find it I'll report a new one. Empathy Is a
great app for how simple but usefull it is cause it has a fully
functioning Facebook chat that is Built in STOCK, No stupid plug in that
you need to dig around for.

[Bug 235529] Re: no option for audio to fade out on exit/stop, fade in on play/resume

2011-01-21 Thread Daniel Clem
This is the only thing (small as it is) that Rhythmbox has over Banshee.
If Banshee is to become the stock loaded player in Natty Narwhal, they
have to make sure it atleast has all the same features as Rhythmbox
other wise it would be a step back in that small area and people would
be wanting it very badly.

[Bug 670044] [NEW] Brasero can't right a ISO image that I made for a Video dvd

2010-11-02 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I used DeVeDe to make a dvd iso and was trying to burn it to the dvd but
it said something about "error, can't not write" And I don't thing the
problem is with DeVeDe. I have never been able to write a dvd or back up
a dvd to another dvd within Linux in the 1 year I've used it. And I've
gone through pretty much every dvd ripping software that is in the
Ubuntu Software Center and eachone either is confusing to use or does
not have a good quality output video, or it just doesn't finish at all
cause it freezes or has an error. And this is also true of dvd authoring
software, I've tried all the ones I can find that allow me to create a
dvd menu and none of them work. I have the non-DRM avi video. What is so
difficult about burning that to a dvd so I can watch it on a player?
This really needs to be worked out and maybe choose or write better
software cause this is getting to be un-acceptable short coming of
Linux. Despite my love for open source and the community.

[Bug 660917] [NEW] Screen brightness adjustment does not change at all on my Acer Aspire Timeline 5810TZ

2010-10-14 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

I have tried both going into the system preferences and using the
hardware adjustment ( function key + the left or right arrow key ) It
used to work on the older Ubuntu 9.10 version. Please stop dropping the
drivers for hardware. Especially for hardware that is barely older than
1 year. I am currently on 10.10 if that is not in the report. If Linux
is to gain ground hardware support is crucial. And things like screen
brightness is basic, much less printers, webcams, and other peripherals.
I am not a advanced user at all. I am just a previous basic windows user
trying to both switch to and support Linux.

[Bug 658563] [NEW] The indicator Applet Appmenu (or the Mac like Global Menu) needs alot of work.

2010-10-11 Thread Daniel Clem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I really like it and it works great most of the time. But I can not
add it to more than one bar cause it just give me error messages and
doesn't add it. I have a 2 monitor Setup and one of the big flaws of Mac
and 2 monitor set ups is that both the dock and the menu bar can only be
on one screen at a time. And when you have more than one monitor it is
very frustrating to have to have windows open on both screens but still
have to go back to the main screen for the menu bar and dock. That is
the beauty of because you can have panels and configure them all you
want. But this applet still has the same short coming as the Mac
iteration of it. I know this is not a popular applet, but I really like
it and would love to see a fix for this.
