[Bug 45928] Re: High error rate on UMTS modem

2006-06-22 Thread Mathias Hasselmann
I was tracking the bug by playing with the MTU for the point-to-point
link (smaller packets -> higher probability for the packet to pass the
lossy link), by watching the output of ifconfig and by switching
kernels. Guess you have to put you hands on the source code for finding
the bug (trying kernel.org version of 2.6.15+, 2.6.8; compare them);
reported the bug here 'cause it is some kind of Ubuntu issue, but also
because I do not care enough for fixing it/reporting it upstream to the
right kernel hacker.

[Bug 30333] Re: After upgrading from breezy, the system will not boot

2006-06-22 Thread Yannis Thomopoulos
Why do developers prefer to close their eyes on a bug like this rather
than face it? Everyone who has upgraded from Breezy to Dapper find a
myriad of bugs to deal with, including me. Myself, I cannot login
anymore as a normal user, but only if I login as root from kdm/gdm
(modfied the config to be able to do so). The funny thing, is that with
kernel 2.6.12 from breezy I can login fine most of the time, but then I
do not have sound working, even though the modules are installed and
before the upgrade it worked. As for the bug mentioned here, I have
heard a lot of people claiming that initrds are broken, and myself can
confirm this. I cannot boot with 2.6.15, unless I create a new initrd
with yaird instead of mkinitrd.

Question: Do I need an initrd if my modules required for booting are
included in the kernel?

[Bug 50646] After last security updates, hibernation doesn't work

affect to kernel (2.6.15-25-386) and acpi-support (0.85), I guess).

Okay, I still got no go for hibernate. And as you report your system
suspends and hibernates, well I would be interested in the actions/steps
you have done to get it working.

 - Have you change configurations manually?
 - Installed additional packages?
 - Changed the bootparameters?

Could you please write what you have done since the installation, this
would be very helpful for me.

Thank you

[Bug 35174] Re: ThinkPad X60 cannot Resume from Suspend

2006-06-22 Thread Littleiffel
iSorry for the messages, this one is the last for today...

Hibernate is also working(suspending and getting session back works).
However my wired network is down(after hibernate) and I am using the
NetworkManager which does not work either after coming up again.

The NetworkManger is not working because hibernate changes the
/etc/network/interfaces file.(To get NM working I had to comment out all
the devices except lo)

And now the file /etc/network/interfaces contains an entry, and
therefore NM is not working after coming up.

So does hibernate process alter the /etc/network/interfaces file???

[Bug 35601] Re: [X600] Black screen with DRI

2006-06-22 Thread sean
This sounds a lot like bug #28925, about others, most of which have had
more success using the radeon drivers, or getting the fglrx driver by
apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx (which is what I did, because I've had
similar troubles with an X800). I would try that.

I've noticed most of the ATI cards newer than the radeon 9600 don't work
with the ATI driver, and I suspect the problem may be somehow linked.
But that's just a suspicion. I'm not sure what we could do about that.

[Bug 50650] Dapper refuses to load ohci_hcd after upgrade to 2.6.15-25

2006-06-22 Thread Kian Ryan
Public bug reported:

AMD64
ASUS K8N Mobo

Clean install of Dapper, upgrade of packages using standard "install
updates" icon. System would no longer boot and would hang when
attempting to load ohci_hcd.

Attempted fallback to -23 and the problem still persisted, system would
hang at same point. Attempted noacpi options, this still made no
difference. After reading this bug report, I switched off USB 2.0
support in my BIOS, falling back on USB 1.1 and the system booted fine.
I've seen this problem on a few other reports/blogs and it appears to be
a combination of the nForce chipset and combined USB 1.1/2.0.

I have the same problem...
I tried to open the file.ps on another machine and there is no problem. I had

Since originally getting this bug, I've done a fresh install of Dapper
and have upgraded to kernel 2.6.15-25-686 (sky2 ver 1.4) and I'm still
having the same problems. Same also happens with 2.6.15-15-386 (also

[Bug 14044] Re: Fullscreen display split between screens with Xinerama/MergedFB

2006-06-22 Thread Daniel Frein
the reason of this behavior is the lack of appropriate screen modes in
xorg.conf - if only dual-head modes are defined, full screen-apps fail
to change to an appropriate resolution. also using the "radeon" driver,
the following MetaModes in xorg.conf should have the desired effect:

Option "MetaModes" "1024x768-1024x768 1024x768 800x600 640x480"

this defines one dualhead mode with two times 1024x768, yielding in
2048x768 resolution and three additional modes without any definition
for the second screen. during switching to these modes, xorg switches
on-the-fly to a clone mode with the requested resolution. starting of
full-screen apps (like SDL-games) now automatically triggers switching
to a clone mode - no more centering of full screen apps between both
monitors.

Therefore I don't think that this is a SDL problem but due to a non-
optimal xorg configuration (at least not in dapper; could also be that
the problem was fixed in the meantime).

[Bug 50652] Screen blanks and doesn't refresh

[Bug 50614] Re: Please update

2006-06-22 Thread Thomas Schwinge
You're out for item three on that list, I guess. I'm not sure that it
actually holds in this case, as no program is supposed to be directly
linked against libpam-heimdal, but it rather is dlopen()ed by the PAM
libraries only when explicitly specified in /etc/pam.d/*, which isn't
even the case after installing the libpam-heimdal package, but instead
requires manual configuration. So, in my opinion libpam-heimdal is not
a library in that case, but more like an application.

Instead of going consequently on and filing a number of separate bug
reports against libpam-heimdal, I decided to go the--at least for me--
much easier way: I just grabbed the sources from Debian testing, built
them and installed. Worked flawlessly.

I filed a duplicate of this bug against gksu (didnt know that there was

Might i add:

1) Whatever you type after the gksu window loses focus ends up in the
application having focus behind the faded desktop. Including enter, so if your
unlucky you might send your password to someone on IM or IRC (parts of mine
ended up in a openoffice document befor i realised what was happening).

2) The 'menu' key on a windows keyboard has the same effect as the

the binary cd numbers for debian) in bittorrent or ktorrent (and
probably bittornado, I haven't tried), an error occurs, and the download
fails. In ktorrent, this causes an immediate crash of the program, and
whenever ktorrent is restarted, an error message appears: "Cannot
create /debian-testing-amd64-binary-2.iso: Permission denied." (I
attempted to download to the home folder, not root). I admit, this is a
very odd problem.

Other notes: dpkg-reconfigure ktorrent removes the error message
This bug only seems to apply to debian-testing-amd64-binary-x.iso.torrent
files. Other debian cds don't seem to have problems.

[Bug 50655] PCMCIA 32bit wireless cards

2006-06-22 Thread v6sa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmciautils

As I can see the old pcmcia programs package was removed and pcmciautils
were added. Problem is that pccardctl shows that card is inserted for
16bit (oldschool pcmcia) cards, but no entry appears in
iwconfig/ifconfig for a wireless card. Newer 32bit (cardbus) cards work
fine. This is very important for previous generation laptop users. For
example good old Lucent's Orinoco cards are 16bit and many people I
know, use these cards on their older laptops (IBM T20 series for
example) with Ubuntu. Thank you!

Sigh, despite earlier success I faced the same problem this morning
resuming laptop that had been suspended overnight. This bug seems to
depend on how long the laptop is suspended, n-m can cope with being
supended for short periods of time but not several hours - bizarre. Will
now install the scripts John Cooper posted and see how it copes tonight.

[Bug 50658] Memory stick filesystems

2006-06-22 Thread v6sa
Public bug reported:

Hello! This is quite major problem! Many MP3 players and memory sticks
have been formatted as a big FAT32 filesystems. Usually a device is
registered as harddisk (/dev/sda for example) and it has a FAT32
partition on it (/dev/sda1), but many players have only /dev/sda which
is the partition itself formatted as FAT32. I think the nautilus
mounting utility should be modified accordingly so if it detects only
/dev/sda it could be dumb-user mountable too.

Hi,

after I updated to Dapper Drake my laptop mice doesn't support scrolling

pasting when scrolling down.
xev confirms this behaviour - up --> button1, down --> button2

I'm not an expert in linux, so i tried to modified it by xmodmap. Also I
tried several options in xorg.conf (set protocol to auto, limit to 5
button mice,...) but nothing works.

When trying to use the USB-mice (Genius mini traveler) it is not

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 50662] Gnumeric status bar: sum of selected cells, with dates

2006-06-22 Thread Alan Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnumeric

The gnumeric status bar includes a total of all selected cells, in the
appropriate format (e.g. a selection of currency formatted cells will be
shown with a currency symbol).

Unfortunately, the standard spreadsheet convention of value is used,
which includes dates being counted as numbers of days since some epoch
or something. If you select two date cells, it shows you a meaningless
total of these numbers as a date (meaningless since it depends on the
value of the epoch). Worse, if you select e.g. several currency cells
which happen to have a date in the middle of them, the value of the
currency cells will be added to the date in some incredibly meaningless
way, and shown as a new date.

This should be fixed by treating date formatted cells as 0, in the same
way strings are, for the purposes of this sum.

[Bug 35174] Re: ThinkPad X60 cannot Resume from Suspend

2006-06-22 Thread Littleiffel
Tested several times and it only happened once that the file
/etc/network/interfaces was changed. However sometimes coming back from
hibernate and sleep the NetworkManager has kind of problems.

However, I think these problems might be related to the NetworkManager
and not to Hibernate/sleep.

And, all the network devices work properly when coming back to the
session. I simply use the Network Menu to configure my wireless device.

So for me I am happy that Sleep and Hibernate are working(until now all
the time). Except the first time, maybe one has to reboot after
upgrading acpi-support?(As Korny reported a failure for his first try
too)

So I repeat what I have done to get it working:
-upgrade to acpi-support 0.85
- edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add resume=/dev/sda4 as a bootparameter.

/dev/sda4 should be your swap partition.

Thanks to all who helped (me) get this to work properly:)

[Bug 50669] Evolution opens MicroSoft Office .doc files read only

2006-06-22 Thread KarlGoetz
Public bug reported:

In Debian Sarge (OpenOffice.org 1.1.x) when someone opened a .doc
file from an email in Evolution it would open in OpenOffice Read/write, and
changes could be made to the page layout (letter-> a4 etc) before printing.

In Ubuntu Dapper (OpenOffice.org 2.0.2, Evo 2.6) that no longer occurs.
Docs now open read only.

This makes some things (like changing paper format from US Letter to A4) a
/lot/ more complex then it needs to be.
If this could be fixed to open docs read/write and backported to Dapper it
would rock :)
