I have the same problem... I tried to open the file.ps on another machine and there is no problem. I had the same problem when I updated a SUSE. I am sure it is a missing font package but I don't know which one. Just like mcarbone I started to install all possible font packages available on synaptic but this had no effect. My problem is however sligthly different since my fonts are slimmer than they should instead of fatter.
