Installing Debian on system with AIC7770
Hi All, I'm trying to install Debian on a system which has a AIC7770. However, while booting the first disk (either from disk or with loadlin) I get a kernel panic: aic7xxx: (aic7xxx_isr) Encountered spurious interrupt. scsi0: BRKADRINT (error(0x1): Illegal Host Access Kernel panic: scsi0: BRKADRINT, error 0x1, seqaddr 0x0. Removing one or more (or all) SCSI devices has no effect. Turning off the scsi reset has no effect either. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Thanks, NiElS (btw, is there a debian install kernel without scsi? in case I had to resort to installing on a IDE disk..) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Software RAID 0 and linux 2.6.8.1
Hi, I want to buy a Promise Fasttrack TX2 plus RAID 0 controller with two SATA hard disks. The controller is a software controller. I want no other hard disks than these two in my PC. Can I boot of this setup with the 2.6 kernel? Is it possible to put Windows XP and Debian Linux on the same RAID 0 array? Is it difficult to install? I shall explain my choises. I really want to buy a RAID 0 (striping) controller, because my current harddisk is the bottleneck in my current system. I have a dual XP-M 2800+ with 1Gbit NIC and 1GB memory. I have read enough about RAID 0. I really want it! I know that it is not safe, but I can backup my data. Re: Software RAID 0 and linux 2.6.8.1
Promise Netherlands told me today that the kernel 2.6.x.x drivers probably come next year. On a dutch forum they told me (2 secs ago) that the name of a non-true hardware controller is a firmware controller. I created a picture http://www.xs4all.nl/~mghvl404/bin/fotos/got/RAID0uitleg.gif to explain what I want with the promise fasttrack TX2 plus firmware raid controller. How can I do this? Paul Yeatman wrote: Well, definitely sounds like you know what you want :) Seems like my confusion between you saying "software" and "hardware" controller is, as Paolo was saying, the Promise FastTrak isn't a "true" hardware controller apparently. It still requires some software, ie. kernel module, on the software side to operate. This is, however, coNSIDerably faster than using strictly software RAID where no card is needed at all. From the description of your system, however, this wouldn't appear to be a problem. I'll opt out of the conversation at this point because your proposed setup is different enough from mine that I can't really helpfully comment on it. As I mentioned (and I believe even tried), the "partial source code" from Promise for the FastTrak doesn't compile (or at least isn't written to compile) for the 2.6 kernel. If the drivers you know of are slow, maybe Paolo is right and you should go with either strictly a hardware RAID controller or strictly software RAID given that you have a slick system. As for the boot loader issue, I'm not sure how a large BIOS is a solution unless you can get your boot loader to use your BIOS which I've never heard of. Unless you are using a true hardware controller, I'm not sure where/how your boot loader will be read with no other disks other than the RAID 0'ed disks. Print black and color on HP
I use a HP PSC 1205 "all-in-one" printer. I have installed the packages "hpijs" and "hpoj". If I configure CUPS as the hpoj docs says: http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/hpoj-0.91/doc/setup-print.html (Use PTAL device as autodetected by CUPS) Then I cannot print. The job goes to queue, and nothing else happens. It doesn't matter if hpoj daemon is running, or if I restart the printer. But if I configure CUPS to use device "usb://Hewlett-Packard/psc%201200%20series?serial=blahblah", AND hpoj daemon is NOT running, it works. Just one problem: In CUPS (or the software I'm printing from) I can select if I want to use color cartridge or black cartridge. I want to use both. I often need color, but then black is just a dark grey. The description of the package hpijs says that "It includes the so-called rss patch, to use pure black ink instead of composite black in printers that don't do color map conversion in firmware". It looks like the feature is there, but it's not working. Any tips on why I can't print black AND color on the same page? BTW: To scan, I need to start the hpoj daemon. While it's running, I cannot print. When I have finished scanning and stopped the hpoj daemon, I also need to restart the printer before I can print. It also works if I disconnect an reconnect the USB cable. Do you know a way to do this with software, so I can script the whole process? -- Mvh. New Debian user
Hi all I am new to this list, works as Architectural engineer in Copenhagen DenmarK. I have used several Linux distro's previously back in 1999, among them was: Red Hat, Mandrake and Suse. But due to my work (AutoCad) I had to install Windows (sadly enough !) Now I've been fooling around with Windows and are getting pretty tired of it !! Lastly I've tried Windows Vista RC1, and man, what a bloatware It just like WinXP just somewhat rearranged though. When I've discovered that the GUI look's and feel have been knows in Linux for years, I've got fed up with it and longing back for the good old Linux days :-) I then discovered that the development of linux really have being increased since the last time I saw it :-) Now my decision have been made I want to install Debian ! Using Debian should only be for desktop use (Gnome), mayby later supplied with some webserver stuff. But I have some doubts/thoughts about which flavour to use. I want to have a stable release installed and then "Sarge" would be the choice, but looking at the descriptions mayby "Etch" should be the lucky one, primarily because my processor is 64 bit. My System (Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo H) (Vista ready BLEEH !!): AMD 64 3800+ X2 DUAL core, 2000 Mhz, 2 core's 2 processors 2 GB of RAM's 2x250 GB harddisc (one of them used to store music and fotos) ATI Radeon X700SE w/256 MB Samsung Syncmaster 940BF, LCD WLAN Router D-Link DI-524 What release and what installation method would you recommend ?? Re: New Debian user
Thanks for reply. I'm not sure I want to repartitioning my other harddrive because I have 60 GB of music and fotos on it, so only one of them should have Debian on it. I presume it's possible to mount the media harddrive and catch my stuff from there ? My router has a fine internal firewall so hopefully it shold be safe to install Etch ? :-/ /niller If you look at the release notes for Etch you'll see that a testing box shouldn't be connected directly to the internet. If you have another box to use as a firewall, then I would go with Etch. Are your harddiscs PATA or SATA? If SATA then Sarge probably (perhaps too strong) won't work with them. If you go with Etch, go with amd64. Further, I would suggest that you set up your drives with equal partitions this: 1 64 MB raid1 --> /boot 2 16 GB raid1 --> lvm: vg-system 3 remainder --> lvm: vg-local vg-system: lv-root 256 MB --> / lv-usr 4 GB--> /usr lv-var 4 GB--> /var lv-swap 2 GB--> consider dm-crypt --> swap vg-local: lv-home 16 GB? --> /home This can all be setup from within the installer (a very sweet partman). This is how I have my new Etch amd64 with dual 80GB SATA drives set up. If you find you need the performance of striping for something you can create a new lv-work with striping. This is also based on having good backups for /home since its not protected by raid1. The advantage of the raid1 setup for the system is that if a drive dies, you won't be doing a reinstall (you would of course loose your /home directory). For cad there is quite a choice (search the packages in Etch for 'cad') and some talk about sharing files with AutoCad. I haven't tried any yet since Etch and my box are so new (I still have AutoCad 11 in the box somewhere, it ran on DOS). Re: New Debian user
Etch, certainly. However, be prepared for Etch to be "obsolete" well before the next Debian release. You will most likely want to change your pointers to either "testing" or "unstable", but don't do that until you are comfortable with Debian and the apt way of package management as a user. I've been using Unstable for the last 6 years, and I can attest to the benefits of continual development vs. leaps at "release" time, but only for a desktop system where you're already accustomed to fiddling with it. Okay Etch it is :-) When you say pointers, do you mean editing the sourcelist ? If you want to confirm hardware detection, get a copy of KNOPPIX. If KNOPPIX recognizes the hardware right away, then you'll have no problems. Yesterday I've tried a LiveCD with Ubuntu on it. It works very well though, it did find all my hardware without a hassle whatsoever. I just want a clean Debian system where I control what's behind the scenes. First things first, get the "netinstall" version. It may or may not support your wireless card, so the most efficient way to do it is to connect via a wired ethernet port to your router/ISP. If you simply cannot connect via wire, see if KNOPPIX detects your wireless card. If so, you can find out what driver module it's using and be ready. Netinst will make sure that you have the latest packages. Since packages on the CDs and DVDs are selected by need, then usage, you can get 99% of a basic system off of just CD#1 and more like 5 9's with the DVD#1. So it's really up to you. My router is connected directly to my machine. I have tried to install "sarge" with a Netinst CD but the installation failed, that's what brought me here :-) Here's the installer page, pick your flavor: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ Hmm the page seems to be down at the moment :-/ While lots of people are going to suggest aptitude, if all you want to do is install GNOME then "tasksel" is a way to get yourself off to a fast start. Personally, I use dselect as my package management tool, but it's a Neanderthal command-line based tool, with very high granularity in terms of package selection. Try it some time. I'll do that :-) You're right that development of Linux in both kernel and userland has been remarkable in the last 6 years. That's about how long ago I erased Windows from my personal system, and I have not regretted it at all. I'm _very_ happy with the tools I have available compared to Windows. My hope right now is to get something like what you have, I would love to play with 64bit and multiple CPU cores. After my ship comes in, I guess. Actually I cant tell you how it is, because the WinXP/Vista RC1 I had was both a 32bit. So I'm very excited about how this goes :-) Really, the only suggestion I can make that you might not hear a hundred times over, is to get KNOPPIX first and verify your hardware. The AMD64 will run i386 code just fine, and KNOPPIX makes an invaluable rescue/repair disk to keep on hand. I wonder, if I put that LiveCD with Ubuntu back in, is there some commands I can use to get all the info I need to install "Etch" ??? Don't hesitate to let debian-user know how the install goes, we've all been there and it's fun to see it through someone else's eyes. After all, installing is something we don't deal with every day. With Debian, you only have to install once. I will, thanks ! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

X aborting
Hi all As John C suggested the "radeon" trick worked :-) Now I can use X as root, but not as user ! I get this error: "X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting. giving up. xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error." I've installed Etch and xorg seems to be the new standard X in Etch. It's odd though, I have thought a user choosen during the installation process should have imediate access to the X environment especially if "Standard" and "Desktop" were chosed as well. But this suits me fine as I can totally control what is to be put in my /home directory :-) I just need some hints to move on from here. ETCH Installation succes :-) WAS: New Debian User
Well didn't know what happened :-) Guess the RAMS didn't emptying itself at first, but today when I want to solve to "X aborting" thing, the Gnome suddenly appear on the screen :-D Oh boy !! This is what have wanted for so long ! Debian on my own box !!! The installation was a breeze, actually I just had to hit "Enter" all the way except when user and passwords had to be typed in and space when I had to select some choices. All the way the installer did find the right hardware etc. For a start I had to write "installgui" at the boot prompt. The GUI-installer is very nice except for some translation errors US > DA (grrr). At the end of the install were I was told to hit enter for ejecting the CD, I had to hit it 3-4 times before it finally pushed out the CD and the reboot could start. When I boot in to the freshly buildt debian it couldn't find the screen. I was prepared for this though because the ATI graphic cards are known to cause some troubles. John C here at this list pointed out to me that I should replace "ati" with "radeon" in my xorg.config. It worked perfectly!! When rebooting the X server aborted "X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting. giving up." This was last night, to day when I wanted to solve this issue the Gnome suddenly came up at my screen. *Stable* *Nice* *Uncluttered* Time for testing: Fire up Epiphany...Im on the internet !! Via synaptic-asking for CD-yes-Installing Claws-email (which I have read a lot good things about). setting up my email. YES mail Inserting my USB-stick.contact-yes-copying some stuff to ~/..cool! Inserting my external harddrivecontact-yes-copying some music to ~/ !! Fire up Ryhtmbox. oh dear.Good old John Denver never sounded better ! My first experience with debian is a success everything works right out of the box!!! And now it's time to catch up with lost linux knowledge (shouldn't be so hard, got this list :-) To the debian crowd, if you see this - Thumbs up!! Is it possible to tweak the bootscreen ?
Hi list I 'm running on a amd-64-Etch install with a 19" LCD-1280x1024: I've found these two bootscreens from LinuxQuestions.org: This one is a typical debian bootscreen, an what mine looks like: http://home.tiscali.nl/isildur/d-i/nl/images/20.02_boot.jpg and this one is from the gentoo distro: http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gentoobootag6.jpg From my perspective, I found the one from gentoo very nice. GTK error ?
Hi list I am running Etch on this box and everything runs perfectly, but when I look in my ~/.xsession-errors file, I have a lot of lines looking like this: (sylpheed-claws-gtk2:3825): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed What is causing this? I dont think it is Sylpheed-claws because the 2.6.0 editon should be stable and the mailprogram itself works without any complaints at all. So my guess is, that it has something to do with GTK. But what ? And how can I change this so these errors doesn't come up ? Hi list I'm running Debian testing (etch) on a AMD64x2 box. I've tried to get used to the K Desktop Environment but didn't succeeded :-) Now I have switched back to Gnome again. Something is terrible wrong with my internet connection, help needed!
Hi all Today when I want to enter www I couldn't get online. I'm running debian testing (etch) and it have worked without any complaints at all ever since I installed it in november last year. My stationary PC is connected with a D-link router DI-524 via cable. My wifes laptop (winXP) is connected to the router via a bluetooth adapter. The laptop couldnt get online too. So I entered (inside the winbrowser on the laptop)http://192.168.0.2 and hit the button "Renew", then my wife was airborn, but not my stationary PC (Fujitsu Siemens AMD64x2) which i bought 5 months ago. I've tried to plugin the cable, into the laptop directly from the router and the laptop still connected fine. All cables are connected correctly. The only thing that I've done was to install XFCE yesterday, but i doubt that this have caused my problems. I have no experience in networking at all, so any help is appreciated!! I've contacted my local LUG but they couldn't help me. We have tried to change the mac address but that didn't help either. The problem was to get an IP-address, but it is impossible!! I wont believe that it is my netcard that should be the problem. I'm really lost without my internet connection! 2007/2/22, Kevin Mark <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: I think this is related to 'avahi-daemon'. If you do dpkg -l|grep avahi and it shows this package, remove it and then restart your system. I've checked avahi with synaptic and it says that there is a conflict with mdnsresponder ?? Howto install the patch for Intel NIC
Hi friends, I am in trouble due to the fact that the driver for the Intel NIC 82567 isn't in Squeeze. As a matter of fact I do need the NIC's working otherwise the system makes no sense. Another fact is, that I hadn't had to patch my system(s) as yet manually. And here is now my question: How will get the patch provided by Nate working? http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=522922 I could get it onto a CD or a USB - Stick and then...???Do Ihave to compile or rename the file? And then? Would a simple modprobe than do? I highly appreciate all comments and help that'll help me fixing my problem. Kind regards Niels Text: GRATIS für alle WEB.DE-Nutzer: Die maxdome Movie-FLAT! No Gnome-settings-Daemon (Sarge + Woody control-center)
I upgraded from Woody to Sarge last week, and now I cannot start my gnome. Xfree and KDE works. Well actually I had some problems with the xserver of sarge, so now I am running xfree from woody. Bug report here http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2003/debian-x-200308/msg00177.html When I chose gnome from gdm I get an error message saying I did not have any gnome-settings-daemon. I just ended up with a grey screen. I tried reinstalling the gnome-control-center from Woody. This package had become uninstalled during the apt-getting. I believe this was due to a conflict with icewm-gnome. I started gnome again and teh same thing happened: Error message and grey screen. Then I tried installing gnome-control-center from unstable. Now I don't see the error message my screen still goes grey. (I also see a splash screen) I realize that this is not a proper bug report, but I am a little confused about which log files I should look in. I have checked /var/log/syslog, /var/log/XFRee86 and /var/gdm, but I seem to miss some information. Is is correct for me to use the gnome-settings-daemon from Woody? Which information should I provide to describe my problem better? Is there a chance that this problem will dissapear by itself as new gnome2 packages enter testing? gcc linker-error's
I have tried to compile the most simple C++ program whith the gcc compiler (2.7.2). I do not have the exact source code, but it's something like: #include void main() { int i = 9; cout << " write a some text.\n"; } saved in a file called test.cc. Trying the following: gcc -c test.cc (works fine indicating the the compiler accepts the input) gcc -L test test.o (assuming test.o made as above) or simply gcc -o test test.cc both give the following (linker) errors: /tmp/cca001121.o: In function `main': /tmp/cca001121.o(.text+0x13): undefined reference to `cout' /tmp/cca001121.o(.text+0x13): undefined reference to `ostream:operator<<(char const *)' does anyone have a solution to this problem. Besides gcc and binutils I have installed: libc5-dev-5.2.18-9.deb, libg++27-2.7.1-2.deb. Also I have tried with: libobjects-0.1.19-1.deb but it didn't help. thanks in advance, Niels Bo Johansen -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . More adaptec 2842 problems
Now I have found bootdisk (.../buzz-updates/disks-i386/special- kernels/boot/boot1440_2.0.5-1.bin) from wich I can boot. That's good, but now new problems has raised. After ``booting/rooting'' I tried to install the basedisks. While doing that the installation process sometimes stops telling that one of the basedisks (it's random witch one) is bad, but they are not, they are new and I have checked them with more disk utilities. Mustly I can read all the disks correctly, but when time comes to extracting the files new problems shows up. Each time when extracting the files each time I most likely get a new error. Typical I get a message somthing like: general protection : CPU : 0 EIP : 0010:[<00118be4>] EFLAGS : 00010206 . . . several register, stack, ... dumps . . . Segmentation fault One time I was actually lucky installing the basesystem. But (again) then a new problem showed up. I copied some *.gz files to my computer and then tried gzip's integrity test (on the file ) gzip -tv filename.gz (file on the computer) and sometimes I am told that the same file is OK and sometimes not (more or less random). But what is much worse is that I often get one of the ``Ooops'' and dumps like a I have just mentioned. What I am telling is that something acts unstable and that's what I would like to ask some of the experts out there about. Is it - Because of some bugs in the rather new kernel version or some of the modules (aic7xxx or some other), or is it - Because of my hardware (jumper settings, BIOS settings, etc) or whatever one can imagine. Is there som thing special one should be aware of installing on a PC machine with an adaptec 2842 host adapter. I am ready to give more details about my everything. I can tell that DOS (5.0 or 6.2) is running fine on my machine, but on the other side a real mode system as DOS does not require much of the host adapter. Niels Bo Johansen

Is the same true for unix? The name Unix is registered trademark in the US and probably also in many other countries. This means that it is not automatically legal to refer to an operative system as a Unix while trying to sell it in the US. Windows provides two API for manipulating files: a 8-bit API where filenames are encoded in the current locale and a 16-bit API where filenames are encoded in Unicode (UTF-16). At the moment, Unison uses the 8-bit API, as this is what is provided by Ocaml under Windows. I think we should eventually switch to the Unicode API (or maybe allow to choose between the two APIs). However, this is a significant amount of work, and none of the Unison developpers are using Windows... -- Jerome -- Niels L Ellegaard http://dirac.ruc.dk/~gnalle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Arnt Karlsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > ..last time I saw Galeon mentioned here, the word was 1.2.5 was the > best Galeon ever made, as later versions lost functionality etc, > what's it like now? I am using stable at work and unstable at home, and I often don't really notice which version I am using. However I have made a few observations: The password remembering GUI has become nicer. It has become easier to choose between several accounts on the same page, and to delete unwanted passwords. It has become possible to drag selected text into a smart bookmarks. This is useful for finding google cache (Drag the current url into the google bookmark, and press cache). If you double click on a link to create a new tab, then the new tab is born with a memory of the the history of it's ancestor. They have come up with a nice algorithm for placing newly created tabs: Suppose you create a tree that describes the ancestry relations between the tabs. Then you perform a depth first search in this tree. This search will result in an ordering of the nodes. This ordering corresponds to the ordering of the tabs in Galeon. (** Insert better description here **) Downloading has become nicer, but perhaps this is a result of a gnome/gtk improvement. Mouse getures are very amusing, but I haven't yet decided if I think that they are useful :) I really miss to be able to middle click on the "previous page button". In 1.2.5 this creates a new tab containing the previous page. In 1.3.11a nothing happens. I also miss to be able to clone a tab by middle clicking on the tab. I have some font problems. If I color text with the mouse, then the colored letters become too big. I should probably report the bug instead of complaining here :) Some of the preferences are still missing, but I don't really miss them. I conclusion I would say that 1.3.11a is a better browser than 1.25. In other words I cannot empty a window for all tabs. Unofficial binary Debian packages considered insecure?
I have been looking at a few of the the sites that offer unofficial debian packages, and I am somewhat confused about the security issues. I am not a great Linux guru, so I wonder how easy it would be to hide a rootkit in a binary package and submit it to apt-get.org or backports.org. Is this a serious risk or am I just being paranoid? My guess is that you have to create the file /etc/apt/preferences, but I don't know much about knoppix. Anyway here is a link to a relevant page in apt-howto. http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html#s-default-version If you get an error named invalid record then you may have made a typing error in the file. gdb + xfree86 (Cannot upgrade xfree to sarge)
Is it possible to start xfree within gdb and get a backtrace? The problem is that if I try try `gdb Xfree86`, and my XFree86 crashes, then my screen locks, and I dont get to see the backtrace. OK here is the long story.. A year ago I filed a bug #204603 that I cannot upgrade XFree86 from Woody to Sarge. I still have this problem, and I am unable to use XFree86 with Sarge. When I try to start Xfree86 in Sarge I get a signal 11 crash with no further explanation. See Bug #204603 for log-files, search google for `gnalle debian XFree86` for a little more info (I cannot paste the links from emacs-w3 ). Last year I solved my problem by downgrading xserver-xfree86 to woody, and placing a line in my /etc/apt/preferences. This worked fine. Today I tried upgrading to Sarge again, and it still doesn`t work, but now I have the extra problem that I cannot downgrade again. The problem is that dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86/stable requires a special version of discover, so I starting from a Sarge distribution it is no longer possible to downgrade xserver-xfree86 to woody. (I forgot to write down the exact eror message) In conclusion I am left with a system with no xserver. XFree86 doesn`t start in Sarge and I cannot downgrade. As a final attempt before reinstall I would like to start xfree86 in gdb, and see if I can construct a backtrace. Perhaps this can give a hint of the source of the problem. So returning to my original question. Is it possible to start XFree86 in gdb and get a backtrace? I recreated my old XF86Config file, so XFree86 4.0 works again, but I would still like debug XFree86 4.3 to find the source of the crash. Is an xcf sourcecode? (according to GPL)
Dear gurus :) Suppose I use gimp to create graphics for a GPL'ed program. First I use gimp to create a layered xcf-files of the graphics, and then I use gimp to manually flatten the layers of the xcf files to create jpg's for the game. Of course I keep the original xcf-files on my harddisk to be able to correct spelling mistakes. Do the xcf-files count as sourcecode? (according to the GPL) Should Debian ideally offer free download of xcf-files corresponding a large percentage of the graphics in the distribution? Where can I read more about this? Thanks in advance Niels PS: GPL definition of sourcecode http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". gdm-greeter doesn't disable itself if xfree86 fails.
At the moment I have trouble starting my xserver. When it fails I get a nice window with the log file, and afterwards I get a message that tells me that gdm will disable itself. It tells me to restart gdm after reconfiguring xfree86 in a better way. However when I press OK, nothing happens. The gdm process does not kill itself, and I have to "killall -9 gdm" before restarting gdm. I would like to change this behavior, because it looks like it may take a while before my X will work again. Is there an easy way to fix this? (or should I file a bug report). Which files should I examine to find out? x-crash (please decipher my log file)
I recently updated my xfree from 4.0 to 4.3 (sarge). Suddenly my x stopped working. I would be grateful if someone could help me decipher my log file. My XF86Conf-4 is almost directly created by dpkg-reconfigure. However I removed the part about the generic mouse because I got a complaint that I did not have the device /dev/input/mice (I don't know how to create it... I make a symbolic link, and it get's deleted) When I write dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 I get an error saying "open_sock() No such device". Afterwards I get errors saying that the configlets ofxserver-common and timezoneconf are bad. In dmesg I have a lot of messages like the following atkdb.c: Unknown key released (tanslated set 2, code 0x7 on isa0060/serio0) atkbd.c: This is an XFREE86 bug. At this point my "nvidia" driver stopped working (with Xfre86). However I was able to make Xfree86 work with the "nv" driver. I think that I would prefer not to start testing the "nvidia" before my X-server stops crashing. This way I can limit the number of sources of error. I have fixed the resfresh and the mouse problems. If I start XFree86 directly as root, and I also get the same signal 11. startx gives me the same signal 11, but I also get XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0:0" after 0 requests (0 known processes) with 0 events remaining When I run kdm, then following is put in my /var/log/syslog. A few month ago I was using the third party "nvidia" driver debian package. However I failed to make it work with the Kernel 2.6.3, so I removed it. Since then I have been using XFree86 4.0 with the standard "nv"-driver. I tried using gdb to debug my XFree86, but when I try this, XFree86 freezes with a black screen and I have to reboot (I have only one computer). I tried doing "sleep 60 && killall -9 XFree86" in one terminal and "gdb XFree86" in another termial, but this was not enough. Is there a tricky way of creating a backtrace of XFree86? Would such a backtrace be useful? I can send send all the output, but I am slightly afraid of flooding. Do Debian gurus use dial-up? :) Thanks for the help Niels -- Niels L Ellegaard http://dirac.ruc.dk/~gnalle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Alternatively, you might try switching to the /dev > directory and running "./MAKEDEV mouse" or maybe even just > "./MAKEDEV". (This is from hazy understanding, so you might want to > do some research along these lines.) Hmm.. I don't own an USB mouse, so I guess that I should not have a device named /dev/input/mice. Perhaps my problem is caused by the fact that I don't know how to force "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" to avoid creating a reference to a generic USB-mouse. Anyways.. This is not a big issue for me. I can just edit my XF86Config-4 by hand, and change the md5sums afterwards.
