That happens sometimes :)

As Volker pointed out: you only set -DSKILL to enable the
code. After that you can just use the skill command sent to
the engine to set it's level. No need to recompile, and you
can even pass options to Crafty at startup.

This, however, is only a GUI for the same procedure as in
crafty (ie. it sends some commands to the engine).

Nope. A UCI engine or an xboard engine does not require
additional code within Scid. That's the nice thing about a
communication protocol :)

These codes are a bit intertwined with the engines. Pascal
is the expert here. Probably he has some idea how to make
use of your findings?

Well, you can have this easily in Scid! Just add opening
books to Scid itself and use them for gameplay. The nice
thing on this level is, that all engines can use the books
you create for Scid. Currently, you've to use a PGN with the
moves as input and then polyglot to create an opening book
from your PGN. See Polyglots readme or the list archive
about this issue.

As I said above, you can have exactly this with a Scid
internal opening book.

To my experience this one works very well. Unlike Volkers
comment about Rybka. Can you confirm this observation as
well?

This list is meant for discussion :)
