This is untrue.  He could add another hard drive, and mount it as /var, or 
even /var/spool/up2date (which is where the up2date headers and such are 
stored).

This is also untrue.  Under all the install options, you are given the 
opportunity to partition your drive using fdisk, disk druid, or to let the 
system to it for you automatically.  On more than one occasion, I've goofed, 
not gone in to manually partition in the server config, and wound up with one 
big partition.
