Sticking with the RH rpm's indeed is a good idea. At least using the spec files from the RH rpm's (at least as far as paths are concerned) when doing custom compiles is a good idea. I just had some bad experiences with a RH machine that has daemons installed in a very unconventional way. Very tricky and error prone. Another question on the subject: Shouldn't/couldn't RedHat setup the mysqld to run as user mysql?
