Hi !

Gee, how rude can one be ? I guess it is the big load of snow u have there
in New England right now, maybe some got in your ear and froze an important
part of your biosystem. ;). Anyways, I installed RH 6.1 out of the box and
had problems when using the printer spooler. After reading several mails on
this list on this same topic and after loading and installing the fixed
packages from http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA2000002-01.html it
worked perfectly. Although a different aspect for exchanging the package is
given on this site, it solved my problem. If you got a working version,
fine, but many seem not to be so lucky. So much about your suspected layer
8 problem. You may check the list archive for the dozens of mails dealing
with the lpr problem.

To put it in other words, upgrading the lpr package solved my problem
accessing my local printer which is connected to /dev/lp0. The parallel
port was detected right and could be accessed directly. After upgrading, i
could use the spooler, the entries in the printcap file were used correctly
and adding a printer with printtool worked from then on. Honestly, to me
that seemed as if the lpr was broken.
