I'm using a little Tapestor 4000 (TR-4) that I picked up for around $230.
The tapes are too expensive ($30 mail-order, $35 from your local office
supply store), but you only need about three of them for a home machine
(about $100 worth of tapes). $330 is still a helluva lot cheaper than
buying a DAT drive (starts at $550).

If you were in a business environment and doing
daily+weekly+monthly+yearly archival backups (needing about 15 tapes in
rotation) then the DAT becomes more cost-effective, due to the low cost of
its takes (under $15). For a home environment I see little need for such
an expensive solution.
