No Linux setup needed if you're using the default Red Hat kernel anyhow.
But the guy had a SCSI controller. Why use up an IDE spot when the SCSI
version of the TR-4 Travan costs maybe $15 more than the IDE version?
And has the general advantages of SCSI (lower overhead, etc.)? 

Although, to tell you the truth, I haven't seen much difference between
the two. The IDE version has a HUGE buffer to compensate for the inherent
clumsiness of IDE tape drive handling, which is probably why it doesn't
cost much less than the SCSI version.
