I frequently use my D30 at ISO 800 and haven't had any problems with noise.
At 1600, it's a bit evident.  I wonder if the D30 you used had the latest
firmware installed?  I really appreciate being able to download and install
the updates on my own.

Have you shot much in low light? My last quibble with digital is low
light capability - what do prints shot at 800 or 1600 look like? The
D30 has too much noise above 400, supposedly the D60 is improved in
this respect.

If someone, *anyone*, comes out with a DSLR under $3k that can produce
decent results at 1600 I'll probably buy it.
