Don't think I agree with Larry here - I don't rate myself as any more than
an adequate photographer, yet I do get some decent images out of Pentax
gear (even the vintage ones) without having to work too hard at it. All
UI's are the brainchild of people who have spent too long at it and trying
to make it do everything, so it does nothing really well. We, the users,
just have to work out what is useful to us and ignore the rest.
I've done some adequate work with an early S-1a[0] and later a K-1000, both
of which require that I participate fully in making the shots. I can even
perpetrate fun with the Holga or the Diana. My K-10d works well enough, but
unless I'm snapshotting with it, I go mostly manual with exposure and focus.
I do regret not having acquired the Auto-110 which was for a time available;
I'd seen just how good decent optics could render on such a small format.
[0] couldn't afford the Spotmatic
I have had 3 Auto-110s (one Auto-110 & 2 Auto-110 Supers). Unfortunately none of
them are currently functional and I can't find anyone who can repair them, so
they now stay in my sock drawer.
I used them a lot at Annual Training with the National Guard & elsewhere because
the whole kit didn't take up much more room than a K-1000 & a spare lens.
I recently found a batch of Kodachrome-64 slides I had shot with the Auto-110 &
scanned them. Nothing spectacular, but that's a reflection on my abilities as a
photographer rather than the capabilities of the camera.
I need to make a mask to scan all my surviving 110 negatives.
With my Pentax DSLRs I primarily shoot in Aperture Priority, because in my
formative film days I could get usable hand-held shutter speeds with ISO 400
film and "f/8 and be there!"
... or I shoot manual mode from a tripod.
