A pair of R-CR-V3's worked very well but, freshly charged, they could deliver 7.4V which apparently fried the camera electronics in some cases. This led to the Pentax warning. Nevertheless, many 1stD & K100D owners still used them successfully without incident. A workaround was a single R-CR-V3 with a pair of R-AA's which gave a "safe" max. starting voltage of about 6.5. I did this successfully for some years with my K110D - still do occasionally. I had one set in the camera & another on charge. The problem with 4 R-AA's is that the starting voltage is only 5.6 and it doesn't take long to get to the cut-off of 4.8V. Not too long ago, KENTLI introduced Li-ion's in AA format with circuitry to limit them to 1.5V. I have no experience of those but if the underlying starting voltage of each is 3.7V (limited to 1.5V) they should last for ages.

I am glad that almost all DSLRs (except the first 2 or 3?) from Pentax are at
least using the same battery format.
Those 2CR5's were a pain. I was glad that *istDS could take AA's as well.
I had 2CR5 as an emergency spare in the bag, but I was using AA's most of the
time.

The *ist-D used a CR-V3 battery OR standard AA batteries (including
rechargeables), although my experience was you got more endurance from the CR-V3
than from the AA batteries.

I don't remember being able to find any rechargeable CR-V3 batteries while I was
using the *ist-D, and lithium AA batteries didn't become widely available until
later.
Pentax didn't recommend rechargeable CR-V3 batteries for use in the
ist-D for some reason. But Don Nelson, Pentax rep and friend of the
PDML always used the rechargeable CR-V3's in his ist-D and never had a
problem.
