After hearing suggestions and comments here, my idea is:
1 - Mark, who already has optimized files of all pictures, adds a
"PDML Photo Annual 2008/2009" official frame to each of them and
emails those official picture files ONLY to their respective authors.
2 - Each author either prints a good picture (or orders a lab
print), signs it and then ships it to someone willing to collect and
put together all the stuff.
I don't see the need for Mark to send me a copy of the same file I
sent him, or the master from which I generated it. His copies are
optimized for a blurb.com book printing. If I'm going to make a print,
I will need different sharpening and color management for my printing
process ... which is not what blurb.com uses.
Voila! The volunteer has got a special pack for the book to be
auctioned, and each author can also put together a personal combo of
a book and a signed photo of his/hers. This can be obtained by
printing and signing more copies of his/her official PDML picture.
Each author will then have one (or more) customized edition book :-)
This could also boost a bit the sales of books to be packed with
special pictures.
I like this idea derivative of what you said above:
Each photographer, on their own recognizance, buys a couple of copies
of the book ... which money goes to the charity fund ... and adds
signed original print and personal statement about their work, maybe
even a brief bio, maybe even a nice boxed enclosure, and sells them
any way they can. Any additional premium profit over cost of goods
(book and the cost of manufacture of the print/enclosure/statement/
etc) can be donated by the photographers to the charity fund - AGAIN
on their own recognizance.
Plusses:
1- No individual person is burdened with doing collating, production,
etc of anyone else's work,
or marketing/selling the special book.
2- No one is required to participate or made to feel responsible to
participate.
3- Each book produced and sold becomes something that that particular
photographer can be
proud of as part of their work.
4- Sales can happen through more than just the Ebay venue.
5- Money is generated for the charity no matter what. Extra money if
enough people actually
sell their individualized book packages. More money than just
selling one special copy of the
book would bring, I bet.
Minuses:
Can't think of any.
