It may not be quite as simple as that.  According to the staff at my Post
Office, if you are putting in an insurance claim, you have to back it up
with receipts that establish the value of the item.  So, if you bought
something some years ago, and are still fortunate to have the receipt, and
the item cost as much or more than the insurance amount, you'd be in good
shape.  But, if you purchased the item for less than the insured amount,
you may have to eat the difference, unless, perhaps, you can prove the item
has appreciated in value..

I'm just repeating what I've been told ... I am not assuring that it's
correct.  However, were you to be shipping expensive items with insurance,
it might be in your best interest to ask about this.  Maybe even ask to see
the regulation in writing.  Post Office personnel are well known for not
knowing the details on all their rules and regulations.
