I like the tulip hoods terribly. Of course the crop-factor allows a
deeper hood, but I would think a deeper than the original, but
still tulip hood would give better protection/contrast increase
than the round one; useful perhaps in a 3.75-times zoom.
I like the tulip hoods: they are more efficient when fitted to the
format like the supplied hood for the 28-105 and 35mm format.
However, they make the lens much larger and consume a lot of space in
my bag, as I nearly always carry lenses fitted with the hood in
place and ready to swap onto the camera quickly. With the DS' smaller
format, the screw-in metal lens hoods are trimmer and give more
effective coverage; a tulip style one fitted to the format would
likely be an improvement, but would also likely be much more
expensive and bulkier.
Is the bayonet mount of the hoods universal across manufacturers?
no. Sometimes you find a match, but they're by no means universal.
p.s.: Interesting zebra effect Godfrey, and I can see why you like
the small Kalt hood aesthetically.
p.p.s: Sack the b who decided to bring out silver lenses.
lol ... I actually kinda like the silver and black look on this
lens. ;-)
