It seems that Lenin, Trotsky, Luxemburg, Gramsci, Mandel, Harvey, Bellamy
Foster and others were right that, under imperialism, the capitalist classes no
longer play a progressive role anywhere. That was my prejudice watching Chavez'
Bolivarian Revolution unfold, but I'm no expert on the other America continent.
I wonder how well Lenin's assertion holds up today across the board: In his
work on Imperialism, he wrote that the capitalist class is no longer
historically progressive, even in many colonial contexts. Trotsky wrote in
Permanent Revolution that the colonial bourgeoisie was too weak and dependent
to lead a democratic revolution. But what about S. Korea, Singapore, and other
colonial countries that seem to have bourgeois democracies comparable to the
west, independent labor unions, and rights to speech, assembly and association
for working people.
