Can you get more data about what their goal is here? Reducing latency?
Reducing bandwidth? Something else?

Letting the app write directly to the backbuffer seems like it would create
problems if, say, the user switches tabs while the app is drawing, but
maybe there's a way around that. Maybe there's another way to achieve
whatever their goal is.
