I just installed vnstat and tested it. It works out of the box with the
simple command
vnstat
producing monthly and daily summaries. It finds the interface without
any help. The man page seems quite adequate.
/usr/share/doc/vnstat/examples/
contains example systemd unit files. There is nothing Debian specific
about it.
What specific problems are you having with it? What specific questions
do you have?
