It is.  The religious "right" has been trying to force compulsory
christianity on us for several hundred years but has not yet succeeded.
Most Americans are christians but the majority oppose making it
compulsory.  The Supreme Court has ruled that "freedom of religion"
includes and requires "freedom from religion" and no effort has been
made (because it would fail) to amend the Constitution to change this.

Freedom of which religion?  Who is going to create the list of
recognized religions so that we will know what we are required to
pretend to believe?  And how can we have freedom of speech if we are not
permitted to deny religion?
