It is. The religious "right" has been trying to force compulsory christianity on us for several hundred years but has not yet succeeded. Most Americans are christians but the majority oppose making it compulsory. The Supreme Court has ruled that "freedom of religion" includes and requires "freedom from religion" and no effort has been made (because it would fail) to amend the Constitution to change this.
