Created an Etch chroot with pbuilder (which uses my local apt-cacher-ng as proxy) and specifying http://archive.debian.org/debian -- and it works just fine! Tried some more things with apt in that chroot and encountered no problems whatsoever. I should mention that I am talking about the current version. The one in Lenny is stone age, and won't be fixed even if there is a minor bug. If you need an update, see here: http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~bloch/acng/download/backports/ This is a straight backport from the latest Debian version, to Lenny. You might need a recent liblzma package from bpo, see http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ for details.
