My laptop with the problem has only Ubuntu and is single-boot. My sons' laptops without the problem are dual-boot. My wife's laptop is single- boot Ubuntu and does not have the problem. All 4 laptops are on 10.04. Therefore, this is independent of dual vs single boot status. It has also been previously debunked that GRUB1 vs GRUB2 or ext3 vs ext4 are not factors.
