My laptop experiencing the problem is also a Thinkpad T400 with single
boot, GRUB1/ext3. I am wondering now if those experiencing this problem
have some commonality of hardware since this problem is not present on
the two Dell laptops and single Toshiba laptop in my household. One
Dell with single boot, GRUB1/ext3, one Dell with dual boot, GRUB1/ext3
and one Toshiba with dual boot, GRUB2/ext4.

Would it be a good practice for everyone having this problem to state
their PC make & model? We might find that this boils down to a few PC's
that share a disk or CD/DVD circuit board.
