I removed and reinstalled mdadm. No luck. I even then ran "sudo mdadm
--manage /dev/null" just to make sure. No luck. It's back.

The update was the standard updates received from Canonical via Update
Manager. This morning consisted of linux headers, linux dev headers,
dpkg and some others. It was significant enough to require a reboot. I
do not regard these with suspicion as they come from Canonical and thus
I did not read all of the updates. Is my trust misplaced?

Go to Update Manager and update your system to get it current. (you are
on 10.04, right?) See if this also blows up your fix.
