Sorry, I replied to the wrong person, ME! Will try again.

OK. Please remember that you're dealing with a Linux newbie, so
don't "assume" that I know much about working in the Linux world.

First of all, I have now booted Feisty with "irqpoll" added to the
correct kernel boot line (recall my comment yesterday about lines
extending on to the next line), which is the second line, not the third
line -- a further comment on this below. Anyway, the sound and system
response times appear to be "normal" -- I've just booted and haven't yet
had time to dig further into how things are operating, and won't have
time to do so until later today.

I've just run and am attaching the output of dmesg.

Now, assuming this has fixed the problems, how do I edit the kernel
line permanently so that I don't have to edit during each boot, and
where do I find that line?

And further, just for my info, what does that change do to the
booting process so that it fixes the problem?

Back to my confusion re: editing the kernel line during boot. The
second line begins with "kernel . . . " and ends with a right-pointing
arrow, so I assumed that that kernel line continued on with the third
line, which began "initrd . . ." . So, yesterday, I edited the third
line by adding irqpoll, and then saw no change in the problems. Today,
I selected the second line, pressed e, and saw the end of the kernel
line, which I then edited by adding irqpoll to it. I then booted and
see the system running "normally". I only mention all this in an
attempt to let you, the knowledgeable Linux person, see how a newbie can
go down the wrong path when trying to "follow directions" to correct
something, and thereby wind up with results that aren't what were
intended when those directions were given. Please know that I'm not
bitching about your instructions, but only advising how things can go
wrong when dealing with a newbie.

Looking forward to hearing how to do a permanent fix to the kernel
boot line, and once again thanking you for your patient help with this.

                   Jerry
