I just finished going through the menu.lst in Feisty, adding irqpoll to
the end of the kernel boot lines in the Edgy and Fedora Core 6 sections.
I didn't know about the technique you described here, so I hope the
end result is the same. I then booted Breezy, Edgy, Feisty, and FC6,
and am pleased to report that the sound and system response times in all
of them appear to be "normal". I, too, saw the text in the latest dmesg
output that said something like "nobody cares" and suggests adding
irqpoll -- of course I have no idea what's going on.

Recall that I asked you in my last email to tell me what was happening
by my adding irqpoll -- I'd appreciate some info on that. I've looked
in several of my Ubuntu and Linux books for "irqpoll", but found
nothing. I forgot to check for a man page about irqpoll while I was in
any of the distros tonight. Would info be in the man pages on menu or
boot?

This problem has been a royal pain for a long time, and I've not been
successful in finding anyone who could help me with it. I'm a long way
from any big city, so no easy access to a LUG. You can imagine how
pleased I was when I heard from you, and you were willing to help.
Thanks again.

I haven't had time to really dig into Feisty to see if there are any
nasty problems hidden away waiting to bite me, but if one finds me I'll
let you know.

        Take care,
                        Jerry
