There are similar bug reports like this one for 8.04, and 8.10, e.g. #249790.
The common thread appears to be compiz on an Intel card (so presumably Intel X server). It could affect other combinations but the reports I've seen have all been on Intel cards. If *increasing* the resolution, compiz doesn't notice it, doesn't adjust or redraw the screen. Workaround is to restart compiz after the change ('compiz --replace'), or switch to metacity when making the change. If *decreasing* the resolution, compiz+X frequently - but not always - crashes and logs you out. The workaround is to switch to metacity while reducing the resolution, then switch back to compiz.
