Found a collection of bug reports (#132065 and duplicates) going way back where compiz also doesn't react if xrandr is use to rotate a screen (e.g. for tablets). Again restarting compiz corrects things. Again metacity notices the change and automatically adjusts.
Does this mean compiz is where a fix is needed? Since the problem always involve compiz, occurs across multiple X servers, and since other windows managers (metacity) play fine with xrandr?
