Not sure if this is the same thing but ATI users appear to be reporting similar problems with compiz and resolution changes in both 8.04 Hardy and 8.10 Intrepid, see #206998 and #205085. Again is these cases, switching to metacity makes the problems go away. Not surprisingly, patches to xrandr are implicated; so it might be versions of xrandr+compiz that is the root bad combination rather than the particular X server.
