I have looked at your output, the problem seems to be naming conventions
e.g. this expects gtk+-X.x whereas Ubuntu uses gtk2.0-binver-2.10.0,
changing this in the configure file (or control if debian package)

On a Hardy 8.04 server, darkstat with libpcap0.8 performed excellently
(using Intrepid's packages).
On a Jaunty 9.04 server, darkstat with libpcap0.8 (1.0.0-1) was extremely slow
(accessing via lynx resulted in inconsistent response times, as
i am also experiencing those exact same issues. let me know which (if
any) logs or system and hardware information you may need.
