After spending many hours trying various suggestions to get sound, I finally
tried the following
If All Else Fails...
By default, Ubuntu uses ALSA to communicate with sound hardware and uses
PulseAudio as a sound server.
If you've followed the troubleshooting guide(s), and still don't have your
audio working properly consider replacing ALSA
 with the OpenSound System (OSS).

I replaced ALSA with OSS and now have sound on my Gateway notebook
computer with Ubuntu 9.04
