well ive have tried laptop-eapd and it does work, somewhat, as you say, because I find it sounded kinda thin compared to what this laptop can do. But at least now I know its *possible* that it might work .. :P
As for headphones, you could always mute off the "side" level, which is the one that seems to control volume for my external speakers. All other switches dont seem to do anything.
