I have tested the newer -ati driver plus newer X server (from your ppa) for a full week, and did not experience a single crash. Right now I cannot revert to the old driver, as I have for the moment switched to Fedora 10. However, on Fedora I haven't experienced such a crash either, using Xserver 1.
