If Daniel is right, then there must be some other reason why it didn't log me
in automatically. How can I find a log that tells me why it didn't log me in?
Please note that after the failure of automatic login, I can log me into the
gdm screen without any problems.

13:40 was exactly the time I booted. I'm not an expert but it looks like
it opens the session for root, then closes it for root (is that normal?)

It's clearly the max for me when Backlight is on 0, don't know. You don't have
this bouncing behavior? Maybe it's the intel video card.
As for the brightness file, I can't find it, is it a text file?

You might think that if it's at the max (in my case 0) and you press the
hotkey "up" then it would always behave in the same way. But it doesn't:
if it comes from 1-4-5-6-7-0 it bounces but not if it comes from 7-2-0.

@matthias: in some cases you can fix it by adding keybindings to your rc
file. E.g. if you add
setopt emacs
to your .zshrc, that should give you emacs keybindings. That worked for

I have gnome-terminal in Startup and by ccsm settings, it will be put in
"Desk 3". But it doesn't work, it shows up in "Desk 1" and misses the

Reproduce:
1) have firefox in workspace 1
2) go to workspace 3
3) in the workspace switcher, click on firefox in workspace 1 and QUICKLY move
pointer to the middle of screen
Result: you have a tooltip saying "Click to start dragging" on your
workspace switcher and it do
As for 3), I was running affinity only as an AWN applet. So 3) could
have happened because of some issues regarding the symbiosis
AWN/affinity.

Bug 339200: it's said here that random items disappear for a couple of
seconds. This is not the case with me, nothing disappears, there is only
a split second "dark black flash" and everything resumes normally.

about unplugging a
PS: I meant, 1-2 min mouse inactivity, then I move the mouse for the
first time after that and I get the flash at exactly that time I start
moving the mouse.

The automatic login currently does not work for me, it keeps sending me
to the gdm login. It worked first when I installed jaunty beta, but one
of the updates broke it.
What happens is that Ubuntu starts up naturally, but then a boot screen
appears w
I tried the script and xrandr indeed increases the number of lines of
Xorg.0.log, but xrandr never caused any flashes. I couldn't yet figure
out if my random flashes change Xorg.0.log because they don't appear
that often, I'll look out for that.
But I found something else that is interesting: say
There is actually a quick dark flash whenever I change brightness. It's
similar to the other flashes but I cannot tell 100% if it's really the
same problem.

Interesting that the flashes appear after inactivity because it could be
related to the screensaver. As far as I know it starts dimming the
screen slowly and not all at once.
