Bug 339200: it's said here that random items disappear for a couple of seconds. This is not the case with me, nothing disappears, there is only a split second "dark black flash" and everything resumes normally.
Bug 344554: I saw that one and also Bug 354356, but they are talking about unplugging and hovering with the mouse over the brightness applet. In my case, the flashes seem to be random.
