Are you sure you have the gstreamer plugins installed for your gstreamer
version? Since you need the 1.x versions, make sure your plugins are also for
that version, the 0.10.x versions will not work.
FWIW: this is not an Amarok bug, but an installation mismatch of the gstreamer

can workaround this for the moment and disable the analyzer by editing
the ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc file and set this value:

-> Configure Amarok -> Plugins and disable the UPnP collection.
AFAIK it is disabled by default in most distributions, else this would need to
be done by distributions who do not ship an UPnP kio. Again, not an Amaro

Did you try to build it against libav? Ubuntu doesn't use ffmpeg, and I
think this is the issue here: this package was built against ffmpeg
instead of libav. I very regularly build my own Amarok from git and with
libav there is no problem, transcoding works.

If that is important: I can hear the disk spin on connection and the light goes

Since then I installed anew and run the Quantal alpha packages, I
haven't seen this happen (still have my old $HOME/.kde/ in case somebody
is interested). AFAIAC this bug can be closed.

Well, the nogtk package is causing more problems than something else,
please get rid of it. As far as Amarok is concerned it should not even
exist as it doesn't provide the cover support.
