This is resolved by upgrading to Debian testing libsane and xsane. Upgrading libsane resoves the crash but the scanner locks up when the receive progress bar reaches a particular point. Upgrading both libsane and xsane seems to resolve the problem completely. I had to upgrade apt as well because

It seems the scanner lockups are related to the selected scanning resolution. Scanning in 100, 1200 and 2400 dpi works but 150 dpi (the default) locks up the scanner - the data transfer stops at certain point and the scanner moves the lamp back, starts flashing the lamp, and has to be power-cycled
