Unfortunately manually. Again because of Ubuntu vs Fedora update policy
(Ubuntu freezes package until next release whereas Fedora works closer
to upstream and is more keen on releasing minor updates), chances to get
a backport update are very low. That's what PPA are made for. Again this
is Ubuntu
I managed to fix it manually by editing the spyder.desktop, which is
missing an icon entry.
1) download the icon from the project page:
http://code.google.com/p/spyderlib/logo?cct=1322729688
2) move it to /usr/share/icons/spyder.png
3) add line "Icon=spyder.png" to /usr/share/applications/spyder.
Building it from source is as easy as downloading the latest source
tarball (2.1.7 is about to be released) and performing "sudo python
setup.py install" in the extracted source directory. Since 11.10 is a
point release, we will have to wait for the next 12.04 for getting this
package updated.
Per
Spyder has been updated to 2.0.12 in Oneiric and shows up correctly in
the application launcher.

Same here, whereas sound level is normal on Centos 6 (kernel 2.6.32).
Same observation as Lee, newer distro all have this issue. Maybe a
permanent fix won't make it to this release but a documented workaround
(if any exists) would be more than welcome.

Seems to be jabref32.xpm still.
To be honnest, I believe that this bug also concerns the way Unity
renders icons. This all comes to the observation that, in Gnome-Shell,
this icon looks the right size, although a bit on the blurry side
probably because of the re-scaling involved. Same thing happen
