Public bug reported:

Most likely a duplicate from #890243, but I am surprised that the
package has been updated from version 2.0.12 in Oneiric to 2.1.8 in
Precise and still the missing icon bug was not fixed. I am using Gnome
Shell and when searching for / launching Spyder, the expected icon does
not show up in the launcher.
In the original bug report, Peter Wurtz proposed to modify the .desktop
file to include an icon entry (currently missing) with the right path to
the icon file, located in
"/usr/share/pyshared/spyderlib/images/spyder.svg". The line to add in
file "spyder.desktop" would then be:

Icon=/usr/share/pyshared/spyderlib/images/spyder.svg
