I have this problem too, and actually filed a bug report before coming
across this one (559577).
After GDM login, a blank desktop wallpaper appears, followed by some
hard drive activity and then the log-in sound. There is then a 20
second pause without any harddrive activity, after which the gnom

I'm new to Launchpad - does anyone how we can get this bug fixed, short
of taking a year out to learn programming and doing it ourselves?
Are the relevant people informed, and have it prioritised? I think it
is a critical bug as it renders your laptop completely useless!

Hi there, I also would like to confirm the presence of this bug.
My hardware : IBM T40, 1.3Ghz, 40GB hardrive, 1.25GB RAM.
I did a fresh install of Karmic 9.10 RC on the entire disk. The install
proceded without problem.
On booting a grub1.97 beta menu flashes, and I can see "error: no such
dev
No Joy, removing that line doesn't work for me...
Looks like I need to reinstall 9.04.

sjogro - what I did was to boot from the 'alternate cd' and that way I
could run a command prompt on the broken system and fix it.

I have the same problem.
Desktop effects were working smoothly on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since a
clean install of Ubuntu 10.10, I find that selecting
System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects causes the screen to
flicker for around 10 seconds, and then the error "Desktop effects could
not be enable
@cefn My card is a 7500 mobility radeon 32mb (yes, I know it's old! -
but this doesn't invalidate the point that I didn't have any problems
before!). I tried to use apport to get some logs on the bug, but for
some reason, when it came to submittin it, I couldn't find this bug in
the web page that

After performing a clean install of Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10, I
found that I could not enable desktop effects. Desktop effects worked
without problem in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04.
What I expect : I go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual
Effects and select "Norm

Ok I may have spoken too soon, desktop effects are too slow to be
useable now - the spinning cube shows one frame of movement between
desktops, compared to a smooth rendition on lucid.

Also affects my thinkpad T40 centrino which I use as my main computer
(not because I'm stingy, but because it works great with 10.04! - why
