I just posted this bug because I was on the verge of moving back to
10.04, and felt that I should at least post a bug report before doing
so.  However, I went on a bit of a wild-goose chase and came across this
helpful page:

I don't ever remember install fglrx, and certainly this has been a
problem since the initial install of Maverick, so I think the bug is
probably still valid.

Anyway, following the advice further down the page..
"Problem: Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch"

Seemed to allow me to stop using the vesa driver and use the radeon on
instead.
