Using -dynroot was not enough it seems. After logging in over SSH (so
network was already setup), my $HOME was still not accessible.
But I found the real problem: udev backgrounds bringing up the network
interfaces [1]. Adding a rule to prevent this allows the rc-script to
bring up the network

I downloaded the Kubuntu 8.04 RC i386 ISO image and tried to burn it to
a CD-RW.
K3b issues a warning, that the image is oversized, but still tries to
burn it. But this fails shortly before the end (at ~95-98%).

I didn't realize there are different sized CD-R/RWs, so this was indeed the
problem.
I have now a 700 MB disc and it works without problems.

Thanks. Actually the -U/--upstream option does exactly what I want, but
it isn't documented in the manpage. Neither is --distributor documented
there (I filed a new bug, #179969 about this).

I cannot reproduce this problem in Debian using KDE 4. When I start
xaos via the menu entry, the startup notification stops when the main
window appears.
