I could only fix it by the specified workaround (dpkg -i --force- overwrite didn't help a little bit). When running polkit-gnome-authorization I see no network-manager section, which older network-manager (0.7 from debian) used to have. I don't know whether that is by design or not. -- [Karmic]

I can confirm this issue occurring immediately after an attempted upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I was only able to repair the problem by manually editing the Network manager.conf file as described above. The problem also occurs for the first session on my machine. In fact, I think it started when I updated to 9.04 (or soon after). Hoping it would be fixed by updating to Karmic, but that did not help. NetworkManager is running, so often a network connection is established, but you need nm-applet t
